Preamble, Purpose, Process & Application Form
PREAMBLE
Bishop’s provides a well rounded education that is built on “in-depth knowledge, insights and understanding gleaned from a variety of disciplines and experiences”. Students learn from experiences gained in the classroom, residence, through athletics, community service and club participation. Bishop’s holds these types of experiences as its goal in providing a “sound education” as per the mission statement.
PURPOSE
This award was created to recognize, each year, the students who put great effort into their contribution to the school or community. This award is based on effort, participation, and contribution to Bishop’s not necessarily on being the best or the most talented. The ideal candidate is the student who is a member of five clubs, who volunteers at Cub Scouts, who helps R.A.s with activities, or the individual who makes an inter-house team and encourages people to participate. This award is not an extension of the golden mitre which is given to students who have made outstanding contributions over four years. The Purple Letter Award is for those who have done nothing spectacular but have remained dedicated – the unsung heroes.
PROCESS
- Students will be evaluated on their:
- Effort
- Participation
- Contribution
- Attention should be given to assuring that the students who receive this award are those that would otherwise fall through the cracks. That is the student who is consistent and dedicated. Precedence should be given to deserving students that wouldn’t really fit the criteria of other awards.
- During SRC Awards Night, students are awarded for outstanding contribution to the SRC or for specific events or projects. This shall be kept under consideration so as not to duplicate winners. Under special circumstances, deemed appropriate by the Committee, there may be some overlap between the SRC awards and the Purple Letter Award.
- A maximum of ten (10) students may be chosen, with attention to the area of Residence, clubs, sports, and community involvement.
NOMINATION
- Winners will be awarded annually at the SRC Awards Banquet. Nomination details will be posted three weeks prior to the deadline.
- Information will be sent to all relevant departments of the University. The Campus newspaper, all organizations involved with Bishop’s Community as well as the Sherbrooke Record (for the community section).
- All relevant departments and organizations will be asked to put forward names with a letter of nomination for those students that have put maximum effort into supporting the University or community in any area.
- Any student, faculty, staff or community member may nominate a student by submitting to the Committee a letter of nomination outlining how the student has contributed.
- Individual students may nominate themselves by bringing three (3) sealed letters of nomination to the Committee.
NOTE:
- Golden Mitre recipients are not eligible to win the Purple Letter Award.
- Reciprocal nominations will be frowned upon by the Selection Committee (eg. Jane Doe nominates John Smith and then John Smith nominates Jane Doe.)
