The Bishop's University Support Fund for Graduate Studies
1. Goals
The purpose of this fund is to support the development of attractive graduate studies programs, encourage students to engage in graduate studies at Bishop's University by allocating institutional scholarships, and promote and reward excellence in research through open, competitive and objectively adjudicated allocation of available funds.
2. Funding amounts and categories
2.1 The Tomlinson Graduate Studies Scholarships
Aim: Encourage students to engage in graduate studies at Bishop's University by providing financial support for them.
Amount: $ 2,000 per student.
Eligibility:
- The applicant must be a registered full-time master’s student.
- The student must have already successfully completed one semester in the program.
- A previous recipient of the Graduate Studies Institutional Scholarship is not eligible more than once during his/her studies in the master’s program.
Deadline: January 15th
2.2 The Best Thesis Proposal Prize
Aim: Promote and reward research excellence.
Amount: $ 1,000.
Eligibility: The applicant must be a registered full-time master’s student.
Evaluation: The application must contain a copy of the thesis proposal and a recommendation letter from the student’s supervisor that includes an assessment of the proposal.
Deadline: April 15th.
2.3 The Tomlinson Travel Grants
Aim:
- Provide financial support for students traveling to conferences.
- Encourage students to submit and present their research at recognized academic conferences.
Amount: The amount available will vary, depending on the number of accepted applications
Eligibility:
- The applicant must be a registered full-time master’s student.
- The applicant must prove participation by submitting a formal letter of acceptance or the conference program when it is received.
- The applicant may submit no more than one application for each competition.
- Only one student per paper can receive a travel grant.
- Eligible expenses include the costs of transportation, registration and accommodation.
Evaluation:
- The importance of the conference to the applicant's research program.
- The supervisor’s assessment of the conference relevance to the applicant’s research program.
- Paper presentations are given priority over poster presentations.
Deadline: September 30th and January 15th. The committee may consider retroactive funding on an individual basis.
2.4 Programs Development Grant
Aim: Provide financial support for graduate program development and promotion.
Amount: Varies up to $ 1,000 per application.
Eligibility:
- The Applicant must be tenure stream or a tenured faculty member at Bishop's University.
- Eligible expenses include (but are not limited to) document editing and revision, external expertise, recruitment activities, etc.
- The program development grant cannot be used to fund course releases.
Evaluation:
- The requests are evaluated based on their presumed importance and impact on the master’s program.
- Programs must have senate approval before applying for a development grant.
- Justification of costs must be submitted to the committee.
2.5 The Tomlinson Graduate Studies Opportunity Fund
The committee reserves an amount of $ 2,500 per year to support graduate student initiatives to organize social and intellectual activities (receptions, workshops, colloquia, lectures series, etc). The objective is to help establish a stimulating and enriching studying environment for graduate students at Bishop's University.
