Residence and Conference Services offers internet in all residence rooms and most common areas within residence. Each resident has a unique login name and password to access their RezNet account, which is the same as their Bishop's email username and password. All university registered students living in residence will receive RezNet internet access.

How much access do I get?
The RezNet connection is the equivalent of a high-speed connection. Users will receive a maximum bandwidth speed of 1.5mb per second. This means that an average user will be able to surf the net, stream videos, and send email completely hassle free.
Users will receive unrestricted access to the internet, with a maximum combined upload / download limit of 6gb per week at high speed access and after that will receive reduced speed access. Reduced speed access will still allow all services to continue, but at reduced transfer rates.
Unsubscribed Users - Users who are not university registered or not living in residence, still have very limited access. They will still have access to anything on the Bishop's Website. This means that if the address begins with "www.ubishops.ca", an unsubscribed user will be able to access it.

What are the limitations?
The following limitations have been put in place to ensure the maximum amount of fairness in bandwidth allocation between network users. Unfortunately, if no limitations were in place, some users would be getting the full benefit of the residence bandwidth, while others would get none.
All RezNet users have a combined upload / download limit of 6gb (gigabytes) per week at high speed service (up to 1.5 Mbps). After you have reached 6gb of data transfer (uploads/downloads) you will receive reduced internet service (up to 160 kbps). Downloading occurs any time that your computer requests information from the internet (ie, accessing a webpage, downloading music, etc). Uploading occurs any time that your computer sends information out to the internet (ie, entering username / password, sending an email, "seeding" your downloaded files, etc). Please be aware that many Peer-to-Peer programs run in the background and allow other users to download files from you. This does count against your total upload / download quota.
If a user goes over their 6gb combined quota for any given week, their internet service will be modified. The user will no longer have "high-speed" access to the internet, and their connection will be capped at 160 kbps. This is done to ensure that other users on the network will still receive high-speed access to the internet and their share of the bandwidth. To restore high speed service, users must logout and re-login after 2:00am on Saturday

How do I log in / out?
Logging In - Logging in to RezNet is easy. If you are not currently logged in, all you need to do is go to your browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Netscape, Safari) and try to access the internet. You should be redirected immediately to the login screen. If you do not, chances are your browser has cached your homepage (meaning it doesn't access the internet to retrieve it), so you will have to either hit refresh to query the server to access the remote page, or access any other page on the internet.
Logging Out - When you log in to RezNet, there will be a popup window that will open that will allow you to logout. If you do not have popups enabled, this window will not open. Don't worry! You can still log out another way. If you go to the RezNet login page there is a link in the top right corner to log out. The other way to logout is to simply click here or enter logout.webcon on the url line of you browser. Be wary! That link will log you out of RezNet.

What are the Terms of Service, and do I have to read them?
It is assumed that when you sign on to RezNet, you have read and understand the Terms of Service (TOS). The TOS are rules and guidelines governing the use of your RezNet connection. Ignorance of the TOS is not an excuse.

How can I protect my PC from viruses
First, make sure you have an
anti-virus program installed and
running on your computer, with the
latest virus definitions. Most virus
programs will automatically update
your virus definitions for you. If
you do not have an anti-virus
program, Bishop's offers McAfee
Anti-Virus, free to all students. Please go in "My Free Software" in
myBU to
download McAfee.
Second, make sure you have the
latest patches and security fixes
for your operating system. The
easiest way to do this is to turn on
the Automatic Updates feature of
your operating system. If it is
turned on, you will automatically be
notified when there is a new patch
for your operating system, and you
only need to choose to install it -
the rest will take care of itself.

Who do I call if I have problems connecting to RezNet?
The first thing you should do is check to make sure you are logged in. If you open your internet browser and you automatically get redirected to the login page, then you need to login. If you still have problems, you should check with the Customer Service Counter in Paterson Hall to validate your login credentials. They will either be able to help you, or direct you to someone who can.

What does 6gb transfer mean and what does 160 kbps mean?
GB stands for gigabyte and is a unit of measurement. Click here for more details.
Kbps stands for kilobits per second and is a unit of data transfer rate. Click here for more details. Please note that this is still about 3 times the speed of the maximum dialup connection.

How can I limit my upload / download sessions in programs such as Bittorrents, Kazaa, Limewire, etc?
Most peer-to-peer programs will have a setting that will allow you to adjust the speed of your uploads and downloads. Some programs will allow you the option of not uploading files from your computer while with some programs such as Bittorrent you can reduce the rate of transfer for the files that you are uploading. It is important to keep in mind that your 6gb high speed limit includes both uploads and downloads. By limiting the rate in which you upload you can maximize your downloads. Often times most users do not realize that while they are downloading, they are uploading as well.
Limiting uploads:
In Limewire, click tools on the top menu bar and then options. Click on uploads slots and set them both to be zero. Now you have set your Limewire so that you are not allowing uploading of your files at all. Click apply and then ok and you are all set.
In Bittorrent, click view on the top menu bar and then click settings. Slide the upload bar as far to the left as possible to reduce the speed of your upload rate. The lowest you can go is 4KB/s. Now click the "x" on the top right corner of the menu box and you are set.
In Kazaa, click tools on the the top menu bar and then options. Click on the advanced tab and where it says "maximum bandwidth in kilobits to be used for transferring files to other Kazaa users" set that to zero and hit apply and then ok.
