Policy for Managing Intellectual Property at Bishop's University

Invention Disclosure

In compliance with the Action Plan Managing Intellectual Property of the Québec Government, Bishop's researchers have the responsibility to disclose their research findings to the University once they want to commercialize them.
To this end, the Invention Disclosure Form (Word 97 document) must be completed and sent to the Vice-Principal (Faculty Box 30, McGreer 218).

SiXtron Advanced Materials (spin-off company)

SiXtron Advanced Materials is a joint spin-off company of Bishop’s University and Université de Sherbrooke. It received $1 million from two venture capital investors, MSBi Capital and Innovatech sud du Québec. The company, which was created to commercially exploit new materials in the semi-conductor field, is based in Sherbrooke.

The core technology is the result of joint research by Dr. Mihai Scarlete of Bishop’s University’s Chemistry Department and Dr. Çetin Aktik of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the Université de Sherbrooke. The technology developed is a process to deposit amorphous silicon carbide on affordable substrates. The thin coats obtained form an excellent semi-conductor. There are many possible applications for this new technological platform, from solar cells and covers for fiber optics, to the encapsulation of silicon chips, to name but a few. With the professors’ expertise and that of their research teams, along with the universities’ support, SiXtron is well positioned to become a world leader in its field. The regional benefits from this new technology should be considerable.
