A large number of organizations outside the university award grants to researchers. The most important ones are the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la nature et les technologies (FQRNT), and the Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la société et la culture (FQRSC).
