The Animal Care Committee (ACC) is responsible for the review and approval of research protocols to ensure that all animal use within Bishop’s jurisdiction is in compliance with institutional, municipal, federal and provincial regulations, and the guidelines of the Canadian Council on Animal Care.

A submission is required by any researcher working with vertebrate species (including behavioural observations in the field) and with invertebrate species with a more highly developed nervous system (i.e. Cephalopods). As required by the ACC, in accordance with CCAC guidelines, an Animal Utilization Form MUST be filed with, and approved by the ACC prior to undertaking any project involving the use of vertebrate animals. The purpose of these forms is to satisfy the ACC that humane practices and proper animal care standards are practiced. Researchers should consult the 3Rs microsite to find out about the three principles which guide scientists on the ethical use of animals in science: Replacement, Reduction and Refinement. | |
Applications for renewal of, or minor amendments to, a previously approved protocol should be submitted to the Research Office for approval by the ACC. For any major changes to a protocol or after three consecutive renewals, the submission of a new protocol is required. Deadlines: This form must be submitted by August 31, December 31 and March 31 or the following business day if the 31st of the month falls on a weekend or holiday. | |
An annual report form is required for all completed or continuing research projects utilizing animals. Deadlines: This form must be submitted by January 15 or the following business day if the 15th of the month falls on a weekend of holiday. |
