FAQ

Q:  What is QUEUC?
A:  QUEUC stands for Quebec Universities English Undergraduate Conference. It is an annual gathering of undergraduate students studying in any domain of English. The event allows students from across the country with similar passions to share their works and ideas with one another in a friendly, comfortable environment.

Q:  Where is QUEUC held?
A:  QUEUC is hosted by Bishop’s University, located in the borough of Lennoxville in the city of Sherbrooke, QC.

Q:  How do I get to Bishop's University?

Q:  When is QUEUC being held?
A:  QUEUC will take place on February 24th through February 26th, 2012

Q:  Who can submit a paper?
A:  Any student in undergraduate studies can submit a paper to be considered. While the conference is organized by the English department, students from other disciplines will also be appreciated for bringing a different perspective.

Q:  What quality is expected of the essays?
A:  Essays are expected to be written by an undergraduate student and to be of the length of 7 to 8 pages with a reading time of 15 minutes. All essays submitted will be examined by the QUEUC vetting committee. When considering papers to be admitted to the conference, the vetting committee is not only looking at the quality of submitted papers, but also at their ability to fit into various panels that are divided by theme, genre, and/or historical period.

Q:  How do I submit a paper?
A:  All papers should be e-mailed to queuc@ubishops.ca. Submitted papers should include a cover letter with the following information: name, e-mail address, contact phone number, title of paper.
 
Q: Can I simply attend the conference without presenting?
A: Students who do not wish to submit a paper may also attend the conference.

Q:  When is the deadline for essay submission?
A:  The deadline for essay submission is December 16th 2011. Accepted presenters will be asked to confirm their participation by February 1st 2011.

Q: How do I register for the conference?
A: Registration is currently closed, but will be available after papers have been submitted. Registration can be done in two ways:

  • With a credit card through the Register Online section of the website, or
  • Via cash or cheque, made out to Dr. Jessica Riddell, and a letter (with your academic affiliation, name, contact info and e mail address), to be sent to:

Q: How much does it cost to attend?
A: The price for the conference is $20 for students and $40 for non-students (including faculty and staff). The fee includes two dinners, breakfast, lunch, a wine and cheese, and a poetry slam to end the weekend.

Q:  Why should I be interested in QUEUC?
A:  QUEUC is a unique opportunity to meet other English students from across the country with whom you can discuss ideas, interests, and share your passions.  You will listen to a diverse selection of essays which will more than quench your thirst for academia, in a comfortable and friendly context.  Bishop’s University beautiful campus is located in a relatively secluded rural area, making it an ideal place for such an event to be held.  QUEUC is an excellent opportunity to learn and improve your analytical skills by encountering new ways of approaching the subjects you love.

Q:  Will there be essays concerning subjects other than English?
A:  Students from other disciplines within the Humanities are also encouraged to submit papers.

Q: How much does the conference cost?
A: We are currently projecting a cost of $20 for presenters, $25 for participants and $40 for faculty members. These prices will be confirmed in time for registration.

Q: What is included in the conference price?
A: The price includes a conference presenter package, three meals, the welcome reception, a wine and cheese, a plenary speaker, and a poetry slam.

Q:  Will I be able to ask questions?
A:  At the end of each panel, a question period will be held in which any participant may ask questions regarding the paper.  Because of the friendly, close atmosphere of the conference, participants will be able to talk to each other at any time.

Q: Where can I stay overnight?
A: We have a dedicated committee of accommodations liaisons who will seek to find the most comfortable and convenient options for your stay in Lennoxville.

Q:  Is the conference wheelchair-accessible?
A:  The conference is indeed wheelchair-accessible.
