Dr. Laura Mitchell
My research centres on two areas of health and well-being; the psychology of pain perception and pain management, and music as an intervention for health. Within these I am particularly interested in how our attention and emotion interact and influence health outcomes, how and when a perception of control benefits our health, and in individual difference factors affecting outcomes.
My main series of studies has explored the efficacy of music listening for pain relief both in an experimental context and in those suffering from acute and chronic pain, with the aim of optimizing the intervention for effective integration into daily pain management. At present I am also studying the pain experience of recreational cannabis users and their perceptions of the long-term effects of the drug on physical and psychological health.
Primary Cluster Themes:
1. Chronic Illness and Pain Management
3. Stress, Health and Well-Being
