Vision

The TLC (Teaching and Learning Centre) supports Bishop’s guiding vision to be Canada’s foremost undergraduate university by facilitating intellectual and personal growth for members of our diverse learning community.

Mission

Our mission is to strive for excellence in teaching and learning; we support inspired and innovative pedagogy within the classroom and beyond, in research, scholarship, and creative activity, with the goal of enhancing student learning.

Fostering a culture of teaching excellence

At Bishop’s, we are small and yet mighty in our aspirations “to be the institution of choice for outstanding young people seeking academic excellence and a comprehensive undergraduate experience” (excerpted from our institutional mission). In Fall 2011, the Dean of Education, Dr. Cathy Beauchamp, was mandated by the Academic Officers to launch an initiative to enhance a culture of university teaching and learning. In determining membership, there was an attempt to draw from the university community broadly to ensure a wide participation. A number of individuals – from across the divisions – became founding members of the Teaching and Learning Centre Initiative (TLCI) in Fall 2012. Faculty (from English, Psychology, Chemistry, Education, Business, Political Science), librarians, and staff (ITS) formed the original ad hoc committee. Our approach from the outset has been interdisciplinary: our committee values the range of disciplines and academic perspectives not only in committee membership but also for our community more broadly.
