Russian History

BORIS Catalogue:   English

This is a selective list of reference tools available for the study of Russian History. A separate guide is available for European history.

BORIS, the Library's OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) is the primary source for material in the Library. For works by a particular author, search under the author's name: ie. Salisbury, Harrison Evans, 1908-. For a particular title, search under the title: ie. The Soviet Union and the Arab East Under Khrushchev.

For works about a particular individual or a particular subject, do a subject search under the appropriate name: ie. Lenin, Vladimir Il'ich, 1870-1924; or subject heading: ie. Russia-History, 1698-1801. The Library of Congress Subject Heading List (the five large red books kept in the Lobby) will help you determine the correct subject headings. A history of this country may be found under: Russia-History, Soviet Union-History, Russia (Federation), and names of individual republics: ie. Estonia, Kyrghystan, etc.

Russian history books have Library of Congress classification numbers beginning with DK. Most of the books on this list are located in the Reference Room. The location "Ref/IndSd" in the call number indicates that the book is shelved on an Index Stand.

This is not a complete list. For more information or help in using the materials on the list, please ask at the Reference Desk.

NB: Titles marked with a * have older volumes shelved in the "Ref M" section, the Reference Mezzanine, the upper level of the Reference room.
