Wi-Fi, 3G Data & Data Roaming

What You Should Know About Data

Wi-Fi: Your Best Friend

Connection to a Wi-Fi network means that your device is currently using that network's connection to communicate with the internet. At home, this would be considered connecting to your Service Provider and using your home's internet. On campus however, we provide free access to a University-wide network for students, faculty and staff. You can connect your iOS device to this network (WIZABU) following the steps provided here.

This symbol means you're connected to Wi-Fi.

3G & LTE: For When Wi-Fi isn't an Option

Connection to a 3G or LTE network (indicated by the 3G/LTE symbol below) indicates that your phone is currently using your cellular network to access the internet. This means that your device is using data included in your phone plan to access information for all of your apps. Often, phone plans include a set amount of data per month, however, some plans do not, and your phone company will bill you for using this type of access. If you are unsure about whether your phone plan includes data or you simply don't want to use cellular data, follow the steps provided below.

This symbol means you're connected to 3G Data.
Step 1

Turning Off 3G/LTE

* Please Note: Turning 3G off prevents all apps (including eMail, Facebook & iMessage) from accessing the internet and retrieving information.

  1. Enter the Settings menu on your device via the icon shown to the right.
  2. Select the 'General' settings option.
  3. Under the 'General' menu, select 'Cellular.'
  4. Flick the switch into the desired position to turn cellular data ON or OFF.

* Please Note: If you later decide that you want to use cellular data or you switch to a phone plan that has data, you can easily return to this menu and turn 3G back on.

Data Roaming

Keeping Data on a Leash

Data roaming refers to when your phone begins to use a connection outside of your coverage zone. This occurs most often when you bring your phone close to the border of the United States or when you travel internationally. Data roaming uses data outside of your plan and therefore your phone company will charge you for any data you use. Unless you've arranged with your phone company to have prepaid international data, we advise turning Data Roaming off on your phone.

Step 1

Turning Data Roaming Off

  1. Enter the Settings menu on your device via the icon shown to the right.
  2. Select the 'General' settings option.
  3. Under the 'General' menu, select 'Cellular.'
  4. Flick the 'Data Roaming' switch into the desired position to turn it ON or OFF.

* Please Note: If you do intend to travel outside of the country, Data Roaming is required in order to access the internet without a Wi-Fi connection.
