ELEMENTARY TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMME

The Elementary Teacher Education Programme at Bishop's University is a two step programme leading to two degrees, a Bachelor of Arts in Educational Studies and a Bachelor of Education. This combination of degrees is required in order to be eligible for a teaching permit or "brevet d'enseignement."

The first degree prepares the student to teach a broad range of subjects that can be found in the elementary curriculum. Students who have completed another bachelor degree will be required to follow this programme as part of their B.Ed.

SECONDARY TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMME

The Secondary Teacher Education Program at Bishop's University is a two step program leading to two degrees, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or a Bachelor of Sciences (B.Sc.) with a Double Major (Education and a teaching discipline) and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) This combination of degrees is required in order to be eligible for a teaching permit or "brevet d'enseignement."

Step 1
Students must choose from one of the following eleven profiles: Mathematics, English, Social Studies, Science Teaching Major (one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics), French, French/Spanish, Fine Arts, Music and Drama.

The first degree, the BA or BSc, is a 93 credit (123 credits for students from out of province with grade 12) program with a Double Major in Secondary Education and one of the above profiles. This degree may be completed on a part time basis.

Step 2
The second degree, the B.Ed., is a 36 credit program that must be completed on a full time basis and begins in the fall semester only.

Students who have completed an initial undergraduate degree at another institution may apply directly to the B.Ed. but must complete all of the prerequisite courses that are normally taken as part of the first degree before proceeding to the final year. For this reason it normally takes between two to three years to complete the B.Ed. in this way.

Practicum

Graduate Program

Master of Education (M.Ed.) in three concentrations: Educational Leadership, Curriculum Studies, Art Education

The School of Education offers a Master of Education program on a part-time basis for practicing teachers and school administrators in three concentrations: Educational Leadership, Curriculum Studies, and Art Education.

Courses are given during fall, winter, spring and summer sessions in a schedule designed to accommodate practicing teachers and school administrators. Throughout the fall, winter and spring courses are normally scheduled on week-ends; during the summer courses are held on week days through July and early August. Most graduate courses have an on-line component in addition to face-to-face sessions given on the Bishop’s campus or at selected locations in school boards of the province.

Some compulsory courses are common to all three concentrations in Educational Leadership, Curriculum Studies and Art Education. Other specialization courses are specific to each of the concentrations. Students are required to complete a nine credit Exit Project, Monograph or Art Exhibition in consultation with a University supervisor as the final stage of the program.
