The
Eastern Townships has an undeniably unique landscape. This uniqueness
can be attributed to the many cultural groups that settled the region
starting with New Englanders as early as 1790, immigrants of British
origin (English, Scottish, Irish) in the 1820s and migrating French
Canadians in the 1850s. The presence of each one of these cultural
groups is reflected in the different architectural styles present in the
landscape
Due
to changes in the boundaries of the Eastern Townships region, former
townshippers find themselves included within different regions. Despite
these changes, many individuals and families that now officially reside
outside of the area still consider themselves townshippers and continue
to be involved in the region. This is a reflection of people's strong
regional identity, one that is tied directly to the landscape.
