Women's Hockey goes 2-1-1 in Vermont, Côté named Athlete of the Week

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

The Bishop's Gaiters Athlete of the Week is Taylor Côté of the Women's Hockey team.

Côté led the Polar Bears Women's Hockey team to a pair of wins in last weekend's tournament in Stowe, Vt. In the Bears' first game on Friday night she scored a hat trick to lead the Bears to a 9-0 win over Stowe. She followed that up with a pair of goals on Saturday morning, as the Bears won their first two games.

Women's Hockey goes 2-1-1 at Stowe Tournament

The Polar Bears hit the ice for four games last weekend, as they traveled to a tournament in Stowe, Vermont.

The Bears' first game, on Friday night, was against the hosts from Stowe, and the Bears were able to take advantage of some supple goaltending, as they cruised to a 9-0 victory. Taylor Côté led the Polar Bears with a hat trick, while Emilee Walker added two goals, and Elyse Driver, Sarah Bennett, Lane Laplante and Erika Cook netted one each. Alysha McLeod picked up the shutout in goal.

On Saturday, the Bears played three games, starting with a 7-1 win over the Motley Crew from Morrisville, Vt. Côté scored a pair of goals to pace the Bears, while Driver, Walker, Laplante, Cook and Chantal Richard each scored one, with McLeod picking up her second straight win. The second game of the day proved to be more of a test, as the Bears fought to a scoreless tie with the Green Mountain Girls (Burlington, Vt.). Bianca Letarte picked up the shutout for the Bears. The tournament final was a rematch with the Green Mountain Girls. By this point, however, fatigue had taken its toll as the Polar Bears suffered a torpid 2-0 shutout loss. Alysha McLeod suffered the loss in goal for Bishop's.


Women's Hockey defeats Sherbrooke Juniors, hosts Alumni

The Polar Bears played one game last week, on Friday night vs. the Sherbrooke Junior A squad, and came away with a 3-2 shootout victory. Erika Cook netted the shootout winner in the fourth round, while Alysha McLeod was perfect in the Bears' net. Taylor Coté and Chantal Richard scored the two Bears goals in regulation time.

On Saturday, the Bears faced off against the Polar Bears Alumni, as part of Bishop's Winter Homecoming festivities. The current Bears came out on top, scoring a 6-2 victory over the "old girls". After the game, the Bears hosted a reception for their alumni at the Old Lennoxville Golf Course where many stories were recounted, some of them true.

UP NEXT: The Polar Bears are off until March 12, when they will play in a tournament in Stowe, Vt.


Women's Hockey dumps Galt in scoring outburst

MONDAY: POLAR BEARS 8, ALEXANDER GALT 0
The Polar Bears' only action last week was an 8-0 victory over Alexander Galt on Monday night at the W.B. Scott Arena. The Bears' got a pair of goals each from Emiliee Walker, Lane Laplante and Taylor Côté, while Chantal Richard and Elyse Driver each added singles. Alysha McLeod picked up the shutout.

UP NEXT: The Polar Bears' next game is Friday night at the W.B. Scott Arena against an opponent to be determined. The Bears will have their annual Alumnae game the following day at 10:15 a.m.


Lackluster first period sends Women's Hockey to 6-2 defeat

The Polar Bears dropped their only game of last weekend, a 6-2 loss to the Sherbrooke RW.

SATURDAY: SHERBROOKE RW 6, POLAR BEARS 2
On Saturday, the Polar Bears dropped a 6-2 decision to the Sherbrooke RW senior team. The Polar Bears got off to a slow start, and fell behind 3-0 in the first half of the first period. The Bears rebounded in the latter stages, keyed by goals from Sacha Vanasse Gauche and Lindsay Hamilton, but the visitors cruised to the 6-2 victory. Undisciplined play also cost the Bears, as they took ten minor penalties in the game.

UP NEXT: The Polar Bears' next game is Monday night at the W.B. Scott Arena, where they will face Alexander Galt.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:

The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Emilee Walker of the Women's Hockey team and Tim Hunter of the Men's Basketball team

Walker led the Polar Bears for the second straight week. On Friday night, she scored the game-winner as the Bears picked up a come-from-behind 3-1 win over the CV Alumnae at the W.B. Scott Arena.

Hunter led the Gaiters in all five major offensive categories on Saturday night against Laval. He scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds, made six assists, three steals and blocked a shot in the Gaiters' 78-71 loss. The 16 points and seven rebounds were a season high for Hunter. On Friday, he recorded a game-high four assists and a team-high two steals.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY (3-10-1)
Women's Hockey notches home win on Saturday night

The Polar Bears played only one game last weekend, a 3-1 come-from-behind win over the CV Alumnae.

FRIDAY: POLAR BEARS 3, CV ALUMNAE 1
On Friday, the Polar Bears scored a 3-1 victory over the Montreal-based CV Alumnae team at the W.B. Scott Arena. The visitors got on the board first, but the Bears fought back with three unanswered goals to take a hard-fought 3-1 victory. Erika Cook scored two goals for the Polar Bears, while Emilee Walker scored the game-winner. Nathasha Snyder picked up the win in the Bears' net.

UP NEXT: The Polar Bears' homestand continues on Saturday night, as they host the Sherbrooke RW. Faceoff is set for 7:45 p.m.


Bears make final of Holland College tournament

The Polar Bears had a busy weekend, playing five games on a three-day trip to the Maritimes as they advanced to the finals of the Holland College tournament.

FRIDAY: UNB 2, POLAR BEARS 1
The Bears opened their weekend with a game in Fredericton against the UNB Red Blazers, who are also a club team. A late power-play goal gave the Blazers a 2-1 victory. Rookie Monika Bolduc was the only Polar Bear to find the net. Alicia McLeod took the loss in goal for the Bears.

SATURDAY: POLAR BEARS 3, UNB SAINT JOHN 0; POLAR BEARS 1 HOLLAND COLLEGE 1
On Saturday night, after making the 350-km trip from Fredericton to Charlottetown, the Bears played a pair of games at the Holland College Intercollegiate Women's Hockey Challenge Cup. In their first game, the Bears shut out UNB Saint John by a score of 3-0, with Tara Pelly, Kaila Ezard and Sarah Bennett all scoring, while Alicia McLeod picked up the shutout.
In the second game, a goal by Emilee Walker with 1:53 left gave the Polar Bears a 1-1 tie against the Holland College Hurricanes. McLeod picked up the tie in net for the Bears.

SUNDAY: CHARLOTTETOWN 1, POLAR BEARS 0; CHARLOTTETOWN 5, POLAR BEARS 2
On Sunday morning, the Polar Bears played their final round-robin game of the tournament, against the Charlottetown Power Blades, a Senior team. The Bears were unable to turn the red light on, as they fell 1-0. Despite the loss, the Bears advanced to the tournament championship game.

An hour after their first game ended, the Bears faced a rematch against the undefeated Power Blades in the tournament championship. The result was no different than earlier in the day, as the Bears fell 5-2. The Bishop's goal-scorers were Emilee Walker and Monika Bolduc, while McLeod took both losses in net for the Bears.

UP NEXT: The Polar Bears return home on Friday to face the CV Alumnae, a Senior team from Montreal. Faceoff at the W.B. Scott Arena is set for 7:45 p.m.


Women's Hockey returns to action with loss to Sherbrooke, Eastern trip set for this weekend

The Bishop's Polar Bears returned to action with a narrow 5-4 loss to the Sherbrooke Junior A's on Monday night. The Bears had been idle for six weeks, and that showed as they fell behind 4-0 to the local side. However, the Bears stormed back with four goals in the third period, falling just short of completing the comeback. The Bishop's goal-scorers were Emilie Walker, Chantal Richard, Lane Laplante and Sarah Bennett.  

UP NEXT: The Polar Bears will head to the Maritimes for a road trip this weekend. On Friday night, they will play the UNB Red Blazers. Faceoff in Fredericton is set for 6 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, the Bears will compete in the Holland College Intercollegiate Women's Hockey Challenge Cup in North Rustico, P.E.I. The Bears will face Holland College, UNB Saint John and a local senior team over the course of the two-day tournament. The two top teams will advance to the championship game, set for Sunday at 2 p.m. (Atlantic).


Bears go 1-2 as Shawville wins third consecutive Polar Bear Tourney

The Bishop's Polar Bears hosted their annual tournament last weekend, and it was the Shawville Chameaux coming out on top, after a thrilling 3-2 shootout victory over the Cornwall Intermediate AA Typhoons. Mary Maglieri scored the lone shootout goal as the Chameaux avenged an 8-1 defeat on Friday night and won their third consecutive tournament championship.

The Polar Bears went 1-2 in the six-team tournament, and did not qualify for the semifinals, which saw the Typhoons down the Redwine (Sherbrooke) 2-1, while Shawville defeated The Women (Sherbrooke) 6-0.

On Friday, the Bears picked up their first win of the season, a 2-1 victory over Alexander Galt Regional High School. Erika Cook and Monica Bolduc scored for the Bears. On Saturday morning, the Bears were shut out 5-0 by Cornwall. The last game of the preliminary round saw the Bears fall 3-2 to The Women, with Sacha Vanasse-Gouchie and Katie Andrews scoring in a losing cause. Alysha McLeod played all three games in net, picking up her first win as a Polar Bear on Friday night.

The Bears look forward to next year's tournament, and would like to thank all the people who played and helped out all weekend.

Polar Bears season starts with home loss

The Polar Bears' season got off on a losing note last Friday at the W.B. Scott Arena, as they fell 3-2 to the Sherbrooke Junior AAs. A pair of rookies found the twine for the Bears, as Elyse Driver and Taylor Côté scored in their first career games. Alysha McLeod and Natasha Snyder.

UP NEXT: The Bears are idle this week, but return to action November 7, when they will visit Stanstead College.
