Gaiters fightback falls short in 68-56 loss at No. 8 Laval

QUEBEC CITY – The Bishop’s Gaiters came back from a ten-point first quarter deficit, and led late in the third quarter, before finally succumbing 68-56 to the No. 8-ranked Laval Rouge et Or in a Quebec University Basketball League semifinal tonight at the PEPS Gymnasium. The game was tied 52-52 with 5:00 to go before Laval broke it open with an 8-2 run, punctuated by an Elyse Jobin three-pointer with 31 seconds left. With the win, Laval advances to the QUBL championship game against the McGill Martlets, who beat UQAM in the other semifinal.

For Bishop’s (12-14, 12-14 CIS, 6-10 QUBL), Katy Germain (Val d’Or, Que.), fresh off being named a QUBL First Team All-Star, led all scorers with 17 points on 6-for-14 shooting, while Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) added ten points and a team-high six rebounds.

For Laval (20-7, 20-5 CIS, 13-3 QUBL), Marie-Michelle Genois scored 15 points, with Myriam Lamarre adding 14 points and Marie-Pascale Nadeau scoring 11. Genois finished just short of a double-double, grabbing a game-high nine rebounds, while Nadeau collected eight. (More...)

THE RECORDS: The Gaiters are 12-13 overall and finished tied for fourth in the QUBL at 6-10 with Concordia. The Gaiters won the fourth seed in the playoffs based on their 3-1 record against Concordia this year. Laval finished the regular season with an 18-6 record (18-5 vs. CIS) and their 13-3 league record put them five games ahead of second-place UQAM.

THE SERIES: This will be the fifth meeting of the year between the Rouge et Or and the Gaiters, and the fourth matchup in the past six weeks. While Laval has won all four games, it is worth noting that one game (Nov. 21 at Lennoxville) was decided in overtime, and the last game (Feb. 27 at Laval) was only decided on the final possession. The Rouge et Or holds a 26-11 lead in the series since 2002-03, and an 8-1 lead in the playoffs.

Two Gaiters honoured in annual QUBL awards

LENNOXVILLE – Two members of the Bishop's Gaiters Women's Basketball team have been honoured by the Quebec University Basketball League in its annual awards. The two Gaiter honourees are Katy Germain (Val d'Or, Que.), who was named to the league's First All-Star Team for the second straight year, while Bethan Chalke (North Vancouver, B.C.) was named to the league All-Rookie team.

Germain, a fourth-year 5'8" swingman, earned her second straight All-Star nod. The Education student finished fifth in the league with an average of 12.1 points per game, third in three-pointers per game (1.8) and seventh in three-point shooting percentage (0.300). Defensively, she is third in the league with 1.8 steals per game, and led the Gaiters with 4.3 rebounds per game. Her season was highlighted by a 22-point, six-rebound performance at McGill on January 6, and a 20-point, six-rebound game at Concordia on January 22.

Chalke, a 5' 11" forward, averaged 4.8 points and 3.1 rebounds in 16 games this year. The graduate of Handsworth Secondary School led the Gaiters' rookies with an average of 14.4 minutes per game. She finished with a 0.439 field goal percentage, and made three blocks and six steals. She scored a season-high 12 points against Laval on November 21, and led the Gaiters with seven rebounds in last Friday's 63-53 win over the UQAM Citadins.

The Gaiters (12-13, 12-13 CIS, 6-10 QUBL) will visit the No. 7-ranked Laval Rouge et Or on Wednesday night in a QUBL semifinal. Tipoff at the PEPS gymnasium is set for 7 p.m.

QUEBEC CITY – A three-pointer with 13.5 seconds left by Elyse Jobin broke a 53-53 tie, giving the No. 7-ranked Laval Rouge et Or a 56-53 Quebec University Basketball League victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters tonight at the PEPS gymnasium. Jobin finished with a team-high 14 points, including a trio of three-pointers. With the win, Laval finishes the regular season with a 13-3 record (19-7 overall, 19-5 vs. CIS). Bishop’s drops to 12-13 overall (12-13 CIS) and finished fourth in the QUBL with a 6-10 record. The Bishop’s loss sets up a rematch in the QUBL semifinals between the fourth-seeded Gaiters and the top-seeded Rouge et Or.  (More...)

The win assured the Gaiters (12-12, 12-12 CIS, 6-9 QUBL) of at least a fourth-place finish, and kept alive their hopes of moving up to third spot. LENNOXVILLE – The Concordia Stingers kept their playoff hopes alive as they came from behind to score a 68-57 victory over the host Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League action tonight. The Gaiters led by as many as eight points, and 31-30 at halftime, but they surrendered the lead late in the second quarter, and could not get it back. The second-year guard shot 8-for-10 from the field, and 6-for8 from three-point range, as the Rouge et Or picked up their third straight victory. Balanced attack leads UQAM to women's basketball victory over Gaiters

MONTREAL – The UQAM Citadins used a balanced attack to notch a 75-62 win over the Bishop's Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League women's action tonight at the UQAM Sports Centre. Four Citadins scored in double figures, as the hosts took the lead late in the first quarter and led through the rest of the contest. The loss, the Gaiters' third straight, drops them to 10-10 overall (4-7 QUBL). UQAM improves to 7-6 in the regular season (12-11 overall), and remains alone in second place in the league. (More...)

QUEBEC CITY – The Bishop’s Gaiters suffered their second straight loss tonight, a 73-61 defeat at the hands of the No. 6-ranked Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec City. LENNOXVILLE – A double-double by Anneth Him-Lazarenko led the McGill Martlets to a 57-51 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League women’s action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. The second-year forward led all scorers with 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Martlets held off a pair of second-half charges by the Gaiters. The Martlets improve to 4-6 in the QUBL (9-10 overall), putting them in a tie for third in the QUBL with the Gaiters, who fall to 4-5 (10-8 overall).

LENNOXVILLE – A career-high 20 points by Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) went for nought as the Bishop’s Gaiters dropped an 87-78 decision to the Brock Badgers on Day 3 of the Classique des Citadins women’s basketball tournament in Montreal. Gaiters Women's Basketball recovers from slow start to slide past Golden Hawks

LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop’s Gaiters Women’s Basketball team erased an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 65-58 in the opening game of the Classique des Citadins in Montreal tonight. The Gaiters scored only four points in the first quarter, trailed 28-20 at halftime and by as many as 16 points in the third quarter, but went on a 24-3 run to take the lead with nine minutes to go. Gaiters basketball closes out fall with pair of losses at UQAM

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters closed out the fall portion of their regular season schedule with a pair of defeats at the hands of the UQAM Citadins. The Citadins took the women's game by a 72-66 score, and completed the sweep with a 75-63 victory in the men's game.

A balanced UQAM attack led the Citadins to a 72-66 victory over the Gaiters. Five UQAM players hit double figures, led by Michelle Auger-Bellemare's 20 points, as the Citadins came from behind to upend Bishop's.

Gaiters basketball sweeps Concordia to pick up first home wins

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters picked up a sweep of their Quebec University Basketball League games tonight at the Mitchell Gym. In the women's game, the Gaiters downed the Stingers by a 73-61 score. In the nightcap, the Gaiters picked up their first win over Concordia in more than three years, a 77-71 victory.

A career-high 18 points for Marie-Ève Lemoine led the Gaiters to a 73-61 victory over the Concordia Stingers in QUBL action tonight. The Gaiters led wire-to-wire in the game, as they ended their two-game losing skid.

Gaiters basketball suffers pair of narrow losses to Laval

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters came out on the short end of a pair of close games against the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec University Basketball League action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. Women's Basketball dropped a 72-64 (OT) decision to Laval, while Men's Basketball fell 73-68.

WOMEN: #5 LAVAL 72, #7 GAITERS 64 - Game Stats
Bethan Chalke's free throw with 17 seconds left forced overtime, but the No. 7-ranked Bishop's Gaiters eventually fell 72-64 to the No. 5 Laval Rouge et Or. With the Gaiters trailing 61-60, Chalke make one of two free throws to tie the game at 61, the climax of a game that featured 14 ties and six lead changes.

Gaiters basketball drops pair at McGill

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters were swept by McGill in Quebec University Basketball League action last night in Montreal. In the women's game, the Gaiters fell by a 60-43 score, while the men dropped a 102-88 decision in the nightcap.

WOMEN: McGILL 60, #7 GAITERS 43 - Game Stats
The Gaiters' four-game winning streak came to a screeching halt in a 60-43 loss to the Martlets. A poor shooting performance doomed the Gaiters, as they shot a season-low 26.3% from the field.

After a back-and-forth opening quarter that ended with McGill up 14-13, the Martlets pulled away in the second, as they outscored the Gaiters 12-3. The Gaiters went 1-for-11 from the field during the period, and trailed 26-16 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Gaiters used a 9-2 run to close to within seven points, but a 15-0 McGill run over 4:10 put the game beyond doubt.

Women's Basketball holds on to #7 in Canada, duel with #5 Laval awaits

LENNOXVILLE – After last weekend's win over Concordia, the Bishop's Gaiters Women's Basketball team has maintained its No. 7 ranking in this week's CIS Top Ten poll. The Gaiters received 245 points in this week's poll of CIS women's basketball coaches, down slightly from the 249 points they received last week. Simon Fraser remains the top-ranked team in the poll, receiving all 41 first-place votes.

Alex Perno's squad is currently 5-2 overall (1-0 QUBL), and is on a four-game winning streak.


Gaiters split regular-season openers at Concordia

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters opened their Quebec University Basketball League schedule with a split against the Concordia Stingers. In the men's game, the Gaiters fell 69-67, depsite leading most of the night, while the women salvaged a split with a 65-55 victory in the nightcap.

Gabrielle Côté-Caouette's (Quebec City, Que.) 17 points led the seventh-ranked Bishop's Gaiters to a 65-55 victory over the Concordia Stingers tonight in Montreal. Côté-Caouette scored nine of her points in the second quarter, as the Gaiters broke the game open with a 16-6 run.

LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop's Gaiters Women's Basketball team has been ranked No. 7 in the first CIS Top Ten poll of the season. The Gaiters received 208 points in the weekly poll of CIS women's basketball coaches. Alex Perno's squad has a 4-2 overall record, including wins over No. 4 Regina and No. 8 Cape Breton, and losses to No. 3 Windsor and No. 10 Alberta.

The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles of the Women's Basketball team, along with Kyle Exumé of the Football team and Ryan Lethbridge of the Men's Rugby team.

Ouellet-Godcharles led Women's Basketball to a 3-0 sweep of the Don Grant Invitational in Moncton, N.B. last weekend. She averaged a team-high 15.7 points per game, including a 23-point outburst in Sunday's 90-77 win over Dalhousie.

Women's Basketball swept all three games at the Don Grant Invitational tournament in Moncton, N.B. The Gaiters were the only team of the six participants to compile a perfect record. Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles led the Gaiters with 15.7 points per game, and was also stellar defensively. On Friday, the Gaiters dropped the UNB Varsity Reds 85-69, and followed that up with a 70-59 win over Cape Breton on Saturday. On Sunday, the Gaiters dropped the Dalhousie Tigers 90-77.


Gaiters notch second straight women's hoops win, men's hoops & lacrosse fall

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters were in action on three fronts on Saturday night, with both basketball teams in tournament action against the Cape Breton Capers, while Men's Lacrosse hosted Queen's. Women's Basketball came away with a 70-55 win over the Capers at the Don Grant Invitational in Moncton, while Men's Basketball fell 97-55 to the Capers at the Jack Donohue tournament in Ottawa. On the Lacrosse field, the Gaiters suffered their second straight loss with a 9-8 defeat to Queen's.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: In Moncton, the Gaiters picked up their second straight win, a 70-55 victory over the Cape Breton Capers. The Capers, who finished last season ranked No. 6 in the country, trailed 42-27 at halftime, as the Gaiters led throughout the game. The Gaiters' uptempo attack was again on display, as four players hit double figures, led by Katy Germain' 14 points (Val d'Or, Que.). Gabrielle Côté-Caouette (Quebec City, Que.) scored 12 points, while Jessy Roy (Val d'Or, Que.)scored 11 and Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) added ten. Roy was named the Gaiters' player of the game, as she recorded a team-high four assists.


Women's Basketball splits final two games at Alberta Pandas Hoopfest

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters Women's Basketball team split their final two games of the Alberta Pandas Hoopfest this weekend, finishing the weekend in a tie for second place with a 1-2 record. Windsor won the tournament as they were undefeated in three games, while Regina and Alberta also finished at 1-2.

SATURDAY: GAITERS 68, REGINA 64
Marie-Ève Lemoine's 14 points led the Gaiters to their first win of the season, a 68-64 triumph over the Regina Cougars. Lemoine was 6-for-12 from the field as she tied her career high for points in a game. Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles added 13 points for the Gaiters, as she made three three-pointers.

SUNDAY: WINDSOR 51, GAITERS 43
A poor-shooting first half doomed the Gaiters on Sunday afternoon as they fell 51-43 to the Windsor Lancers (3-0). Bishop's shot only 5-for-24 (20.8%) from the field in the first half, and was held to single digits in each of the first two periods. The Lancers took advantage of the Gaiters' shooting woes to build up a 29-13 halftime lead as they cruised to their third straight victory. While Windsor's shooters went cold in the second half, the Gaiters were unable to get any closer than the eight-point final margin.


Women's Basketball drops first game at Alberta Pandas Hoopfest

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters Women's Basketball team dropped their opening game of the season tonight, a 54-50 loss in Edmonton to the host Alberta Pandas. The game featured two ties and 14 lead changes until Alberta went ahead for good with 3:48 left in the fourth quarter.
