Bruce Coulter was the cornerstone in developing the Athletic Department at Bishop’s into a first class organization. Hired in 1962 to lead the program and became the head football coach, Bruce quickly became one of the university’s major assets. An engaging personality with outstanding people skills, Bruce became a very popular and well-known figure on campus with a genuine concern for the individual. Deemed by many as the most innovative coach at any level in Canada, Bruce remains the C.I.A.U.’s most successful football coach with the most wins with a record of 137 wins, 80 losses and 2 ties. In 1986, Bruce earned C.I.A.U. Coach of the Year honours. Bruce’s legacy is such that the Gaiters now play on “Coulter Field”, He retired in 1990. GARTH
SMITH Garth Smith was an outstanding coach, administrator, and most of all, a gentlemen in the truest sense of the world. Garth came to Bishop's in 1954 to be the women's basketball coach and that position developed into an extensive career of 38 years at the university. During his years at Bishop's, Garth held many positions including Assistant Director of Athletics, Intramural Director, Intercollegiate Coordinator, and Head Golf Professional of the Old Lennoxville Golf Course. In addition Garth gained national recognition as head coach of the men's basketball team that he led for 25 years. More importantly than the 532 victories Garth amassed coaching men's women's and junior varsity basketball, he clearly distinguished himself as a coach who cared for the overall development of his players as people and students. Garth retired from the university in 1992. |
