Wins by Men's Rugby and Basketball highlight busy Gaiters' Friday night

October 30, 2009

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters were in action on four fronts on a busy Friday night in Lennoxville, with Men's Rugby and Men's Basketball picking up home wins, while Men's Lacrosse and Women's Soccer went down to defeat. Men's Rugby advanced to their third straight QURU Championship game with a 15-12 win over the Concordia Stingers at Coulter Field. Meanwhile, inside the Mitchell Gym, Men's Basketball fought off a late comeback attempt to defeat the UPEI Panthers 82-80. Earlier in the evening, Women's Soccer fell 4-1 to McGill in their final home game of the season. The only road action for the Gaiters involved the Lacrosse team, who dropped a 6-5 decision to McGill in their CUFLA Quarter-final game.

MEN'S RUGBY: The Pack attacked for Gaiters Men's Rugby, as the forwards accounted for both Gaiters tries in a 15-12 semifinal win over the Concordia Stingers. The Gaiters led throughout, as Billy Murphy (Richmond, Que.) opened the scoring with a 32-yard penalty goal in the 5th minute. No. 8 Ryan Lethbridge (Ottawa, Ont.) extended the Gaiters' lead to 8-0 with a try on the stroke of halftime. Concordia's Percy Graham ran the ball in from ten yards out in the 57th minute to narrow the margin to 8-5. However, Gaiters' Flanker Mathieu Alexandre (Ste-Catherine-de-Hatley, Que.) clinched the game four minutes later, after the pack had pushed the ball into the end zone. Murphy's conversion pushed the lead out to 15-5. The Stingers pulled pack in the last minute as they were awarded a penalty try, and Xavier Birot's convert put Concordia to within three. It proved to be too little, too late, however, as the Gaiters celebrated their fourth straight win.

The Gaiters will face the McGill Redmen (7-0, 6-0 QURU) on Saturday, November 7, in the Quebec University Rugby Union Championship game. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Percival Molson Stadium.
