Mike Andrews commits to Gaiters' Men's Basketball

LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop's University men’s basketball team announced today that Mike Andrews from St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School in Oakville, Ontario has committed to the Gaiters, and will be joining the team for the 2010-11 season.

Andrews, a 6' 10" centre, won a silver medal in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAAA) Class "AAA" championship, as Loyola fell to Toronto Martingrove 56-54 on a last-second shot in the provincial championship game. Loyola posted a 52-5 record in 2009-10 and won seven tournaments.

Provincial champion commits to Gaiters' Men's Basketball

LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop's University men’s basketball team announced today that Matt McLean of Ashbury College in Ottawa has committed to the Gaiters, and will be joining the team for the 2010-11 season.

“We are pleased to welcome Matt to the Gaiter family. He is a very skilled big man, an excellent passer and he makes the players around him better,” said Rod Gilpin, the Gaiters’ Head Coach. “We expect Matt to have an immediate impact on our program, and we think that he has a lot of potential.

McLean, a 6' 8", 200 lb. forward, has played for three years with the Ashbury Colts, where he has won two provincial championship medals. This year, he captained the Colts to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) Class "A" championship, scoring nine points in yesterday’s final game. Earlier in the day, he made a key late dunk, as well as a free throw with no time left, to send the Colts to the provincial championship game. Last season, McLean led the Colts to a bronze medal at the provincial championship. He is a two-time team MVP, and averages 14 points and 12 rebounds per game. (More...)


Gaiters fall 98-70 in QUBL men's semifinal

MONTREAL – Adil El Makssoud’s 34 points led the UQAM Citadins to an 98-70 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters in a Quebec University Basketball League semifinal tonight in Montreal. The raucous crowd of 527 saw the second-year guard go 13-for-24 from the field, as the Citadins (17-14, 12-10 CIS, 11-5 QUBL) forced 29 Gaiters turnovers to pick up the win.

Makssoud led all scorers, while Kevin Bitondo, who started in place of the injured Gregory Saint-Amand, recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Jules Diagne scored 14 points.

For Bishop’s (12-17, 10-17 CIS, 7-9 QUBL), Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.) led with 19 points, while Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) closed out his university career with 15 points. Damon Thomas-Anderson (Verdun, Que.) scored 11 points in what was also his final university game. Tesfaghebriel and Tim Hunter (Baie d’Urfé, Que.) led the Gaiters with seven rebounds each. Onnex Blackwood named QUBL First Team All-Star

LENNOXVILLE – Rookie guard Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.) of the Bishop's Gaiters has been named a Quebec University Basketball League First Team All-Star, as well as a member of the league's All-Rookie Team. The league office in Montreal made the announcement today. Blackwood becomes the first rookie to be named a QUBL First Team All-Star since Laval's Jean-François Beaulieu Maheux was named a First Team All-Star and Rookie of the Year in 2007.

Blackwood, 18, quickly established himself as one of the elite players in the Quebec University Basketball League, leading the Gaiters to their first playoff berth in four years. He made an immediate impact on the Gaiters' lineup, scoring a team-high 14 points in his first-ever university game: October 16 at Carleton - then ranked No. 1, and the the defending national champions.

"You don't expect a true freshman to come in and lead your team in scoring and rebounding," said Gaiters' Head Coach Rod Gilpin. "“He plays with energy and competes in every game. He took advantage of the opportunity he was given, and we are thrilled with his development this year. He is very deserving of this honour, and more." (More...)

LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop's Gaiters used a balanced attack to score a come-from-behind 75-65 win over the UQAM Citadins in Quebec University Basketball League action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. The Gaiters trailed by as many as 19 points in the third quarter, but used a stifling defence to chip away at the lead, before finally taking the lead early in the fourth quarter. LENNOXVILLE – Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) scored 23 points to lead the Bishop’s Gaiters to a 73-67 Quebec University Basketball League win over the Concordia Stingers tonight. The raucous Winter Homecoming crowd of 1,115 saw the Gaiters clinch their first trip to the postseason since 2005-06. LENNOXVILLE – A difficult third quarter proved to be the difference as the Bishop’s Gaiters fell 74-58 to the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec University Basketball League action today at the Mitchell Gym. The Gaiters were outscored 22-5 in the period, as Laval turned a 34-27 halftime lead into a 54-32 bulge. The Gaiters made only two field goals in the period, as they went over four minutes without scoring.With the loss, the Gaiters fall to 4-8 in league play (9-15 overall, 7-15 CIS), and remain tied for fourth in the QUBL with idle Concordia. El Makssoud’s 19 points leads UQAM to men’s basketball victory over Gaiters

MONTREAL - Adil El Makssoud’s 19 points led the UQAM Citadins to a 79-59 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League men’s action tonight at the UQAM Sports Centre. The Citadins broke the game open with a 14-2 run to end the first quarter, as they cruised to the victory. The Gaiters’ loss, their third straight, drops them to 4-7 in league play (9-14 overall, 7-14 CIS), and leaves them tied for fourth place with idle Concordia. Gaiters basketball closes out fall with pair of losses at UQAM

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters closed out the fall portion of their regular season schedule with a pair of defeats at the hands of the UQAM Citadins. The Citadins took the women's game by a 72-66 score, and completed the sweep with a 75-63 victory in the men's game.

MEN: UQAM 75, BISHOP'S 63
A poor-shooting second half doomed the Bishop's Gaiters to a 75-63 defeat at the hands of the UQAM Citadins. After shooting 52.4% in the first half, the Gaiters hit less than 30% of their shots in the second, as UQAM broke open what had been a tight contest.

Gaiters basketball sweeps Concordia to pick up first home wins

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters picked up a sweep of their Quebec University Basketball League games tonight at the Mitchell Gym. In the women's game, the Gaiters downed the Stingers by a 73-61 score. In the nightcap, the Gaiters picked up their first win over Concordia in more than three years, a 77-71 victory.

MEN: GAITERS 77, CONCORDIA 71 - Game Stats
Rookie forwards Onnex Blackwood and Oraine Green led the way as the Gaiters picked up their first league win of the year, a 77-71 triumph over the Concordia Stingers. Blackwood scored 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while Green netted 20 points, including going 8-for-9 from the free-throw line. The Gaiters came from behind in the third quarter to pick up first win over Concordia since Jan. 6, 2006.

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters came out on the short end of a pair of close games against the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec University Basketball League action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. Women's Basketball dropped a 72-64 (OT) decision to Laval, while Men's Basketball fell 73-68.

MEN: LAVAL 73, GAITERS 68 - Game Stats
A 12-2 run by Laval midway through the fourth quarter gave the Rouge et Or a 73-68 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters at the Mitchell Gym. Jean-François Beaulieu-Maheux started the run with a three-pointer and a layup, five of his game-high 22 points. The Laval run broke open a game that had been close through most of the three previous quarters, with ten ties and 11 lead changes.  (More...)

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters were swept by McGill in Quebec University Basketball League action last night in Montreal. In the women's game, the Gaiters fell by a 60-43 score, while the men dropped a 102-88 decision in the nightcap.

Gaiters split regular-season openers at Concordia

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters opened their Quebec University Basketball League schedule with a split against the Concordia Stingers. In the men's game, the Gaiters fell 69-67, depsite leading most of the night, while the women salvaged a split with a 65-55 victory in the nightcap.

A 16-point effort from Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) went to waste as the Gaiters fell 69-67 to the Concordia Stingers. Starting point guard Oraine Green (Toronto, Ont.) keyed the Gaiters to an early lead with nine first-half points, as the Gaiters overcame Concordia's pressure defence to build up a 38-29 lead at the break.  (More...)

Gaiters suffer pair of losses on Sunday afternoon

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters suffered a pair of losses in Women's Soccer and Men's Basketball. In Women's Soccer, the Gaiters fell 10-0 at Montreal against the No. 3-ranked Carabins. Meanwhile, at the Mitchell Gym, the Gaiters dropped a 103-57 decision to the Cape Breton Capers, who are currently ranked No. 7 in the cishoops.ca Top Ten.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Rookie guard Onnex Blackwood (Toronto, Ont.) scored 18 points to lead the Gaiters to an 82-80 victory over the UPEI Panthers.

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters were in action on three fronts on Saturday night, with both basketball teams in tournament action against the Cape Breton Capers, while Men's Lacrosse hosted Queen's. Women's Basketball came away with a 70-55 win over the Capers at the Don Grant Invitational in Moncton, while Men's Basketball fell 97-55 to the Capers at the Jack Donohue tournament in Ottawa. On the Lacrosse field, the Gaiters suffered their second straight loss with a 9-8 defeat to Queen's.

Gaiters fall in women's soccer and men's basketball action

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters were in action on two fronts tonight, but suffered a pair of losses. Women's Soccer fell 1-0 to the Laval Rouge et Or at Coulter Field, while Men's Basketball dropped a 104-51 decision to the Carleton Ravens at the House-Laughton Hoops Classic in Ottawa.
