Gaiters let lead slip away in 78-71 loss to Laval January 30, 2010 QUEBEC CITY – The Bishop’s Gaiters let a ten-point third-quarter lead slip away as they dropped a 78-71 decision to the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec University Basketball League men’s action tonight at the PEPS in Quebec City. The Gaiters fall to 9-13 overall (7-13 CIS, 4-6 QUBL), while Laval improves to 13-14 (11-11 CIS, 7-3 QUBL). The Gaiters were led by Tim Hunter’s 16 points and seven rebounds, both season highs, while Ryan Steele scored 15 points on 7-for-13 shooting. Two other Gaiters scored in double figures, as Hermon Tesfaghebriel scored 13 points and Oraine Green netted ten. Jérôme Turcotte-Routhier led Laval with 23 points, while Etienne Labrecque added 21 and François-Olivier Gagnon-Hébert scored 14 and added a team-high seven rebounds. (More...) Gaiters suffer 73-61 road loss to No. 6 Rouge et Or in women's basketball January 30, 2010 QUEBEC CITY – The Bishop’s Gaiters suffered their second straight loss tonight, a 73-61 defeat at the hands of the No. 6-ranked Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec City. Laval (15-5 ,15-4 CIS, 8-1 QUBL) used a balanced attack, with four players scoring in double-digits, as they led for all but 90 seconds of the game. The Gaiters (10-9, 10-9 CIS, 4-6 QUBL) suffered their second straight loss, and … Laval was led by Marie-Pascale Nadeau’s 15 points and five blocks, with Marie-Michèle Genois adding 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds. The two other Rouge et Or in double digits were Sandrine Ducruc, who came off the bench to score 12 points, while Elyse Jobin scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. The Gaiters were led by Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.), who scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Blackwood scores 20 points in Gaiters’ 81-78 loss to McGill January 29, 2010 LENNOXVILLE –Onnex Blackwood’s (Scarborough, Ont.) third straight 20-point game went for naught as the Gaiters fell 81-78 to the McGill Redmen in Quebec University Basketball League men’s action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. The rookie guard shot 9-for-13 from the field, and finished with a team-high 20 points, but it was not enough to offset McGill’s strong outside shooting. With the win, the Redmen improve to 5-5 in league play (9-14 overall, 9-13 CIS), while the Gaiters fall to 4-5 in the league (9-12 overall, 7-12 CIS). Joining Blackwood in double figures for the Gaiters were fifth-year forwards Damon Thomas-Anderson (Verdun, Que.) and Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.), who each scored 13 points. Thomas-Anderson also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Fourth-year guard Pawel Herra came off the bench to score a game-high 22 points for McGill, while veteran guard Matthew Thornhill added 18 points and Michael White scored 15. (More...) Gaiters comeback attempt falls short in 57-51 loss to Martlets January 29, 2010 LENNOXVILLE – A double-double by Anneth Him-Lazarenko led the McGill Martlets to a 57-51 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League women’s action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. The second-year forward led all scorers with 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Martlets held off a pair of second-half charges by the Gaiters. The Martlets improve to 4-6 in the QUBL (9-10 overall), putting them in a tie for third in the QUBL with the Gaiters, who fall to 4-5 (10-8 overall). The Martlets led by as many as 13 in the third quarter, but the Gaiters came all the way back and tied the game at 48-48 with four minutes left. However, the Gaiters could not get over the hump and take the lead, and the visitors held on for the victory. Katy Germain’s (Val d’Or, Que.) 15 points and three steals led the Gaiters in a losing cause, with Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) scoring eight points and adding four assists. Women’s Basketball Gaiters come from behind to defeat Stingers 63-52 January 22, 2010 MONTREAL – A pair of big second-half performances by Katy Germain (Val d’Or, Que.) and Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) keyed the Bishop’s Gaiters to a 63-52 come-from-behind victory over the Concordia Stingers in Quebec University Basketball League women’s action tonight in Montreal. Germain finished with 20 points, 15 in the second half, while Ouellet-Godcharles scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half as the Gaiters rebounded from a 28-21 halftime deficit. The Gaiters improved to 10-7 on the year, 4-4 in the QUBL, while Concordia drops to 8-13 overall, 3-5 in league play. The key to the Gaiters’ second half comeback was their three-point shooting. In the first half, the Gaiters missed all eight attempts from beyond the arc. In the second half, the Gaiters went 8-for-14 from downtown, led by three from Germain and four by Ouellet-Godcharles. Blackwood scored 24 points, ten in the first quarter, and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Gaiters picked up their third straight win, and improved their record to 9-11 overall, 4-4 in the league (7-11 vs. CIS). Concordia drops to 8-14 overall (8-10 vs. CIS, 2-6 QUBL). Blackwood’s 24 points and 11 rebounds were both game highs, while three other Gaiters were in double figures. Gaiters work overtime to down Citadins 76-69 in Men's Basketball January 15, 2010 LENNOXVILLE – Onnex Blackwood's 20 points led the Gaiters as they came from behind to score a 76-69 (OT) victory over the UQAM Citadins. Blackwood forced overtime as his layup made the score 61-61, capping a Gaiters comeback from nine points down in the fourth quarter, and he made three key free throws late in the extra period to ice the game. Blackwood went 7-for-13 from the field, and 6-for-12 from the line, and made a game-high four steals. Hermon Tesfagehbriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) scored 14 points, while Oraine Green (Toronto, Ont.) added 12 for the Gaiters, who have won four of their past five games overall. Tim McAleenan (Sussex, N.B.) led the Gaiters with seven rebounds. Gaiters Women's Basketball drops 61-53 decision to UQAM January 15, 2010 LENNOXVILLE - A double-double by Irline Noël led the UQAM Citadins to a 61-53 decision over the Bishop's Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League women's action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. Noel scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds - both game highs - as the Citadins led from wire-to-wire and held off a late Gaiters charge. Noël was one of four Citadins in double figures, as Karine Boudrias scored 15 points, Jessica Bibeau-Coté scored 11 and Emie Simard added ten. The Gaiters were led by 15 points from Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.), with Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) scoring 12 points. Benoit Groulx named Gaiters’ Offensive Coordinator January 13, 2010 LENNOXVILLE – Bishop’s Gaiters Head Football Coach Leroy Blugh announced today that Benoit Groulx has been named the team’s new Offensive Coordinator. Groulx, 24, recently completed five seasons as a quarterback with the Laval Rouge et Or, winning the Vanier Cup in 2006 and 2008, and was one of the most decorated players in QUFL history. He won the Hec Crighton Trophy in 2008 as the CIS’ most valuable player, and is a three-time winner of the Jeff Russel Award as the QUFL’s Player of the Year. He was a named a First Team All-Canadian in 2008. “Coming to Bishop’s was the best challenge that was available,” said Groulx. “I’ve always dreamed of being a coach, and when Leroy asked me to come here, it was an offer that I couldn’t let pass. Gaiters squeak past Redmen 62-61 in men's basketball January 6, 2010 MONTREAL – Hermon Tesfaghebriel’s lay-up with 1:58 left was the difference as the Bishop’s Gaiters outlasted the McGill Redmen 62-61 tonight in a Quebec University Basketball League men’s game in Montreal. With the Gaiters trailing 61-60, Tesfaghebriel drove to the net against McGill guard Olivier Bouchard, making the basket but failing to convert the three-point play. The Redmen had several chances to regain the lead, but the Gaiters’ defence kept McGill off the scoreboard. The Redmen took the ball with just under 24 seconds left, and attempted set up a potential game-winning shot. However, their play came to a premature conclusion when Bouchard was called for a carrying the ball violation in front of the McGill bench with 1.9 seconds to play. Oraine Green (Toronto, Ont.) led the Gaiters with 18 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter. Gaiters Women's Basketball cruises to 62-52 victory over Martlets January 6, 2010 MONTREAL - A season-high 22 points by Katy Germain (Val d’Or, Que.) led the Bishop’s Gaiters to a 62-52 win over the McGill Marlets in a Quebec University Basketball League women’s game tonight. Germain went 7-for-15 from the field, and made six free throws, as the Gaiters prevailed in a defensive struggle. Germain was the only Gaiter in double figures, while Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) and Jessy Roy (Val d’Or, Que.) added eight points each and Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) scored seven. Gaiters fall to nationally-ranked Lakehead in Wesmen Classic Championship
December 30, 2009 WINNIPEG – The Lakehead Thunderwolves used a combination of physical play and strong three-point shooting to defeat the Bishop’s Gaiters, 72-58, in the championship game of the 2009 Wesmen Classic in Winnipeg. The tenth-ranked Thunderwolves hit 11 shots from beyond the arc and held Bishop’s to a 34% field goal percentage. Lakehead put the game away early in the third quarter, as they held Bishop’s without a field goal for more than five minutes, stretching their lead to 22 points at 53-31. Four points by Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) with two minutes left pulled the Gaiters to within 13 points, but they could draw no closer, and the Thunderwolves cruised to the victory. For the Gaiters, Ryan Steele (Toronto, Ont.) led with 14 points, as he went 5-for-7 from the field. Tim Hunter (Baie d’Urfé, Que.) scored 11 points, while Tesfaghebriel added 10. Onnex Blackwood (Toronto, Ont.) led the Gaiters with eight rebounds. Blackwood and Hunter were named to the Tournament All-Star team. LENNOXVILLE – A career-high 20 points by Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) went for nought as the Bishop’s Gaiters dropped an 87-78 decision to the Brock Badgers on Day 3 of the Classique des Citadins women’s basketball tournament in Montreal. The Badgers broke the game open with a 13-2 run in the third and fourth quarters to put the game away. Lemoine’s 20 points led the Gaiters, as she went 8-for-13 from the field. Germain added 17 points in 38 minutes, including five three-pointers, while Wilson scored a career-high 14 points. Jessy Roy (Val d’Or, Que.) returned to play today, finishing with nine points, seven rebounds, and six assists. WINNIPEG – Onnex Blackwood’s (Toronto, Ont.) double-double led the Bishop’s Gaiters Men’s Basketball team to a 68-62 win over the host Winnipeg Wesmen in the quarter-finals of the Wesmen Classic. The rookie guard grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and led the Gaiters with 15 points. In addition to Blackwood’s 15 points, two other Gaiters scored in double figures, as Tesfaghebriel scored 14 points – all in the second half – and Damon Thomas-Anderson (Verdun, Que.) came off the bench to score 13. Blackwood’s 12 rebounds led all players, while Thomas-Anderson grabbed seven, and Oraine Green (Toronto, Ont.) had six, a career high. The win improves the Gaiters to 2-0 in the six-team tournament. The Gaiters broke the game open with a 28-point third quarter, and cruised to the victory. Germain and Côté-Caouette’s 16 points led all scorers, while Chalke (North Vancouver B.C.) added 11, as she went 4-for-5 from the field. LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop’s Gaiters Women’s Basketball team erased an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 65-58 in the opening game of the Classique des Citadins in Montreal tonight. The Gaiters scored only four points in the first quarter, trailed 28-20 at halftime and by as many as 16 points in the third quarter, but went on a 24-3 run to take the lead with nine minutes to go. LENNOXVILLE – Jacquie Laidler, a first-year centre with the Bishop's Gaiters Women's Rugby team, has been named to the national women's Under-20 team, as announced by Rugby Canada yesterday. The Anmore, B.C. native was the only player based in the Quebec University Rugby Union to be named to squad. Overall, 14 of the team's 22 members are based at CIS schools. Laidler has previously played representative rugby with the British Columbia provincial team at both the U-17 and U-20 levels, winning two silver and one gold medal. Laidler, who moved from prop to centre midway through the season, was instrumental in nearly every try the Gaiters scored this year, and finished fourth on the team with two tries of her own. She was the Gaiters' Player of the Game in four of the Gaiters' six regular-season games this year. Gaiters' Men's Basketball raises money for local Christmas charity December 17, 2009
LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop's Gaiters Men's Basketball team raised nearly $750 for the Alexander Galt Regional High School's Christmas Basket program last Saturday. The program helps the Galt community meet the needs of many Galt and Eastern Townships Learning Centre families The squad spent the afternoon at the Lennoxville Provigo store bagging groceries, carrying bags out for customers and collected donations for the program, raising a total of $737. The Gaiters return to action on December 28 in the Wesmen Classic, where they will face the host Winnipeg Wesmen in the tournament's first round. Mark Kingston named CUFLA All-Star
December 17, 2009 LENNOXVILLE – Third-year defender Mark Kingston (Oakville, Ont.) has been named an East Division All-Star by the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association. The league made its annual awards announcement last week. Kingston finished the season with five assists and five penalty minutes in ten games. "Mark was strong and quick at transitioning the ball up the field. He was our leader in loose balls many times, and was key in directing our defence," said Damien Roy, the Gaiters' Head Coach. Mark was the only member of the Gaiters to be named an All-Star in hte annual league awards. The Gaiters finished the season with an overall record of 10-6 (6-4 CUFLA East) and were eliminated in the CUFLA Quarterfinals. LENNOXVILLE – Eryn Hessian, the Head Coach of the Bishop's Gaiters Women's Rugby team, will carry the Olympic Torch tomorrow as it passes through eastern Quebec. Hessian is scheduled to carry the torch for approximately 300 metres through the town of Asbsetos tomorrow at 4:19 p.m. Hessian, who teaches math and science at Stanstead College, earned the opportunity to participate in the relay by answering a question a day on the relay website every day for three months with her Grade 7 students last year. This allowed her 93 entries in a random draw and was selected to write an essay on "living Olympic," in which she discussed such virtues as volunteerism, healthy lifestyles and mentorship. Gaiters basketball closes out fall with pair of losses at UQAM November 28, 2009 LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters closed out the fall portion of their regular season schedule with a pair of defeats at the hands of the UQAM Citadins. The Citadins took the women's game by a 72-66 score, and completed the sweep with a 75-63 victory in the men's game.

In the women's game, the Gaiters downed the Stingers by a 73-61 score. In the nightcap, the Gaiters picked up their first win over Concordia in more than three years, a 77-71 victory.

In the women's game, the Gaiters fell by a 60-43 score, while the men dropped a 102-88 decision in the nightcap. The Gaiters received 245 points in this week's poll of CIS women's basketball coaches, down slightly from the 249 points they received last week. Gaiters split regular-season openers at Concordia November 13, 2009 LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters opened their Quebec University Basketball League schedule with a split against the Concordia Stingers. In the men's game, the Gaiters fell 69-67, despite leading most of the night, while the women salvaged a split with a 65-55 victory in the nightcap. November 7, 2009 MONTREAL, Que. – The one-two punch of Rotrand Sené and Marc-Olivier Brouillette led the No. 8 –ranked Montreal Carabins to a 40-15 victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters in a Quebec University Football League semifinal game. The crowd of 3,057 at the CEPSUM, Sené run for 236 yards, including two touchdowns, while Brouillette threw for 363 yards and a touchdown. The Gaiters took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Carabins rattled off 37 unanswered points to book their place in the Dunsmore Cup final. November 5, 2009 LENNOXVILLE – Frances Bajdik-Bova, a fourth-year centre with the Bishop's Gaiters, was named the winner of the CIS Student-Athlete Community Service Award for Women's Rugby. The CIS made the announcement tonight in Vancouver, at the annual Women's Rugby Championship awards banquet. Bajdik-Bova becames the first Gaiter ever to win a CIS national award in women's rugby, and is the first Bishop's athlete in any sport to win a CIS Community Service Award. (More...) October 31, 2009 LENNOXVILLE, Que. – Jesse Andrews’ (Pickering, Ont.) seven-yard touchdown run with 26 seconds left gave the Bishop’s Gaiters a 40-38 victory over the Concordia Stingers in Quebec University Football League action today at Coulter Field. The 1,973 wind-swept fans at Coulter Field saw a wild contest that featured 78 points, eight lead changes, and 972 combined yards of total offence. (More...) Wins by Men's Rugby and Basketball highlight busy Gaiters' Friday night October 30, 2009 LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters were in action on four fronts on a busy Friday night in Lennoxville, with Men's Rugby and Men's Basketball picking up home wins, while Men's Lacrosse and Women's Soccer went down to defeat. Men's Rugby advanced to their third straight QURU Championship game with a 15-12 win over the Concordia Stingers at Coulter Field. Meanwhile, inside the Mitchell Gym, Men's Basketball fought off a late comeback attempt to defeat the UPEI Panthers 82-80. Earlier in the evening, Women's Soccer fell 4-1 to McGill in their final home game of the season. The only road action for the Gaiters involved the Lacrosse team, who dropped a 6-5 decision to McGill in their CUFLA Quarter-final game.
