Pair of basketball sweeps highlight Gaiters' week, pair of home dates on tap

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Tim Hunter of the Men's Basketball team and Annick Stephanny Charles of the Women's Basketball team.

Hunter put in a pair of strong performances in the Gaiters' two losses last weekend. On Friday, he led the Gaiters with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting, and added two assists, three rebounds and two steals. On Saturday, he made a career-high eight assists and a season-high nine rebounds in the Gaiters' 74-58 loss to McGill.

Charles moved into the starting point guard role last weekend, and scored over double digits in both games. On Friday night, she scored 14 points, and made four steals, both team highs. On Saturday, she followed that up with a ten-point, five-rebound and four-assist performance.

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Lane Laplante, Women's Hockey - Led Polar Bears with two goals on Monday night.
  • Damon Thomas-Anderson, Men's Basketball - Scored 14 points, on 7-for-8 shooting, on Friday night at UQAM.
  • Stephanie Burnett, Women's Indoor Soccer - Scored her fourth goal of the season on Sunday
  • Katy Germain, Women's Basketball - Scored 18 points, including four three-pointers, on Saturday vs. Laval
  • Ryan Steele, Men's Basketball - Scored a team-high 15 points on Saturday vs. Laval
  • Frédérique Cloutier, Women's Indoor Soccer - Gaiters team MVP on Sunday

Gaiters fall to UQAM and Laval, pair of home games ahead

FRIDAY: UQAM 79, BISHOP'S 59 - Full Story - Box Score
Adil El Makssoud’s 19 points led the UQAM Citadins to a 79-59 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters on Fridayt at the UQAM Sports Centre. The Citadins broke the game open with a 14-2 run to end the first quarter, as they cruised to the victory. For the Gaiters, Tim Hunter scored 15 points, one off his career high, as he went 6-for-10 from the field. Fifth-year forward Damon Thomas-Anderson scored 14. Hermon Tesfaghebriel led the Gaiters with five rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

SATURDAY: LAVAL 74: BISHOP'S 58 - Full Story - Box Score
A difficult third quarter proved to be the difference as the Bishop’s Gaiters fell 74-58 to the Laval Rouge et Or on Saturday at the Mitchell Gym. The Gaiters were outscored 22-5 in the period, as Laval turned a 34-27 halftime lead into a 54-32 bulge. The Gaiters had three players in double figures, led by rookie Onnex Blackwood’s 15 points and five steals. Ryan Steele came off the bench to score 13 points on 6-for-10 shooting, while Oraine Green added 12 points. Second-year swingman Tim Hunter led the Gaiters with 11 rebounds, seven assists and a pair of blocks.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters host McGill (12-15, 12-14 CIS, 8-6 QUBL) on Friday night, and Concordia (10-17, 10-13 CIS, 4-9 QUBL) on Saturday. Tipoff for both games is at 8 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (10-11, 10-11 CIS, 4-8 QUBL t-4th)
Women's Basketball drops a pair against Laval and UQAM

SATURDAY: UQAM 75, BISHOP'S 62 - Full Story - Box Score
The UQAM Citadins used a balanced attack to notch a 75-62 win over the Bishop's Gaiters on Friday at the UQAM Sports Centre. Four Citadins scored in double figures, as the hosts took the lead late in the first quarter and led through the rest of the contest. Annick Stephanny Charles scored a career-high 14 points, including 10 in the first half, to lead the Gaiters. Rookie forward Bethan Chalke  scored 11 points, one off her career high, while Robyn Wilson finished with nine points and ten rebounds, one point short of a double-double.

SATURDAY: #7 LAVAL 79, BISHOP'S 61 - Full Story - Box Score
Elyse Jobin’s 22 points, including six three-pointers, led the No. 7-ranked Laval Rouge et Or to a 79-61 win over the Gaiters on Saturday night at the Mitchell Gym. The second-year guard shot 8-for-10 from the field, and 6-for-8 from three-point range, as the Rouge et Or picked up their third straight victory. The Gaiters were led by 18 points by Katy Germain, including 4-for-8 from three-point range. Marie-Ève Lemoine and Annick Stephanny Charles scored ten points each, with Charles adding a team-high four assists. Fifth-year forward Robyn Wilson grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters host a pair of games this weekend, against McGill (11-12, 11-12 CIS, 6-8 QUBL) on Friday and Concordia (9-17, 9-15 CIS, 4-9 QUBL) on Saturday. Tipoff at the Mitchell Gym is set for 6 p.m., and both games will be carried live on http://www.ssncanada.ca

WOMEN'S INDOOR SOCCER (0-5, 8th)
Gaiters fall away to Patriotes

The Gaiters hit the road last week to take on the UQTR Patriotes in Trois-Rivières. The Patriotes came away with a 2-1 win, on goals by Jessica Lavallée and Gabrielle Rivest. Steph Burnett replied for the Gaiters, scoring her fourth goal of the year. She is currently third on the QUISL's goal-scoring list.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters (0-5) will host the UQAM Citadins (2-2-1) on Friday night at the Centre Multi-Sport Roland Dussault. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY (4-11-1)
Women's Hockey dumps Galt in scoring outburst

MONDAY: POLAR BEARS 8, ALEXANDER GALT 0
The Polar Bears' only action last week was an 8-0 victory over Alexander Galt on Monday night at the W.B. Scott Arena. The Bears' got a pair of goals each from Emiliee Walker, Lane Laplante and Taylor Côté, while Chantal Richard and Elyse Driver each added singles. Alysha McLeod picked up the shutout.

UP NEXT: The Polar Bears' next game is Friday night at the W.B. Scott Arena against an opponent to be determined. The Bears will have their annual Alumnae game the following day at 10:15 a.m.
