The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Katy Germain of the Women's Basketball team and
Onnex
Blackwood of the Men's Basketball team
Blackwood led the Gaiters to a 74-61 win over the Concordia Stingers on Friday
night with his third double-double of the season. Blackwood scored a career-high
24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Gaiters ran their winning streak to
three games. He shot 9-for-15 from the field in scoring 15 of the Gaiters’ 32
first-half points. Blackwood, a true freshman from Mother Theresa Catholic
Secondary School, has moved into second place in the QUBL scoring list with an
average of 15.9 points per game.Germain, a
fourth-year forward, scored 20 points, including 15 in the
second half, as the Gaiters came from behind to defeat the
Concordia Stingers 63-52 on Friday night. The Val d’Or, Que.
native keyed the Gaiters’ comeback from a 28-21 halftime deficit
with three second-half three pointers. Germain made a
season-high eight field goals, and also tied for the team lead
with a season-high six rebounds. She is now third in the QUBL
scoring standings with an average of 12.8 points per game.

A double-double by Onnex Blackwood
led the
Bishop’s Gaiters to a 74-61 win over the Concordia Stingers on Friday
night. Blackwood scored 24 points,
ten in the first quarter, and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Gaiters picked
up their third straight win. Blackwood’s 24 points and 11 rebounds were
both game highs, while three other Gaiters were in double
figures. Damon Thomas-Anderson came off the bench to score 12 points, while Jeremy Leonard-Smith
scored 11 and Hermon Tesfaghebriel added ten.
UP NEXT: The
Gaiters return home on Friday night to face the McGill Redmen
(8-14, 8-13 CIS, 4-5 QUBL) at the Mitchell Gym. On Saturday, the
Gaiters will hit the road to take on the Laval Rouge et Or
(11-14,9-11 CIS,5-3 QUBL). Both games are set for 8 p.m.
tip-offs. |

A pair of big second-half
performances by Katy Germain and Mélanie
Ouellet-Godcharles keyed the Bishop’s Gaiters to a
63-52 come-from-behind victory over the Concordia Stingers in Quebec
University Basketball League women’s action tonight in Montreal. Germain
finished with 20 points, 15 in the second half, while Ouellet-Godcharles
scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half as the Gaiters rebounded
from a 28-21 halftime deficit. Germain’s 20 points led all scorers, as
she went 8-for-19 from the field and collected a season-high six
rebounds. Ouellet-Godcharles was the only other Gaiter in double
figures, with her 18 points highlighted by her four three-pointers.
Jessy Roy (Val d’Or, Que.) finished with five points, but tied for the
team lead with six rebounds and made a team-high three steals.
UP NEXT: The
Gaiters are back at home on Friday night, as they take on the
McGill Martlets (8-10,8-10 CIS,3-6 QUBL) at the Mitchell Gym. On
Saturday, the Gaiters will head up to Quebec City to take on the
Laval Rouge et Or (13-5,13-4 CIS,7-1 QUBL). Both games are
scheduled for 6 p.m. tip-offs. |

WOMEN'S INDOOR SOCCER

Gaiters shut out at home by Montreal
A
pair of braces by Véronique Laverdière and Éva Thouvent-Hébert
paced the Montreal Carabins (1-0-1) to a 6-0 victory over the
Gaiters on Friday night in Fleurimont. Montreal's other goals
came from Virginie Lévesque and Isabelle Dumais. Katie Wallace
was the player of the game for the Gaiters.
UP NEXT: The Gaiters (0-2) will visit the Laval Rouge et Or
(2-0) on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at the Campus Notre-Dame-de-Foy.
The Rouge et Or have yet to concede a goal in two games this
season. |

WOMEN'S HOCKEY (1-5)
Women's Hockey returns to action with loss to Sherbrooke,
Eastern trip set for this weekend
The Polar
Bears had a busy weekend, playing five games on a three-day trip
to the Maritimes as they advanced to the finals of the Holland
College tournament.
FRIDAY:
UNB 2, POLAR BEARS 1
The Bears
opened their weekend with a game in Fredericton against the UNB
Red Blazers, who are also a club team. A late power-play goal
gave the Blazers a 2-1 victory. Rookie Monika Bolduc was the
only Polar Bear to find the net. Alicia McLeod took the loss in
goal for the Bears.
SATURDAY:
POLAR BEARS 3, UNB
SAINT JOHN 0; POLAR BEARS 1 HOLLAND COLLEGE 1
On
Saturday night, after making the 350-km trip from Fredericton to
Charlottetown, the Bears played a pair of games at the Holland
College Intercollegiate Women's Hockey Challenge Cup. In their
first game, the Bears shut out UNB Saint John by a score of 3-0,
with Tara Pelly, Kaila Ezard and Sarah Bennett all scoring,
while Alicia McLeod picked up the shutout.
In the second game, a goal by Emilee Walker with 1:53 left gave
the Polar Bears a 1-1 tie against the Holland College
Hurricanes. McLeod picked up the tie in net for the Bears.
SUNDAY:
CHARLOTTETOWN 1, POLAR BEARS 0; CHARLOTTETOWN 5, POLAR BEARS 2
On Sunday
morning, the Polar Bears played their final round-robin game of
the tournament, against the Charlottetown Power Blades, a Senior
team. The Bears were unable to turn the red light on, as they
fell 1-0. Despite the loss, the Bears advanced to the tournament
championship game.
An hour after their
first game ended, the Bears faced a rematch against the
undefeated Power Blades in the tournament championship. The
result was no different than earlier in the day, as the Bears
fell 5-2. The Bishop's goal-scorers were Emilee Walker and
Monika Bolduc, while McLeod took both losses in net for the
Bears.
UP NEXT: The Polar
Bears return home on Friday to face the CV Alumnae, a Senior
team from Montreal. Faceoff at the W.B. Scott Arena is set for
7:45 p.m. |
