Basketball swept twice, McGill & Laval await this week

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:

The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Jessy Roy of the Women's Basketball team and Tim Hunter from the Men's Basketball team.

Roy led the Gaiters with 14 points and seven rebounds in their 72-64 OT loss to the No. 5 Laval Rouge et Or. She went 6-for-6 from the free throw line, and also tied for the game high with two assists in the Gaiters' home-opening loss on Saturday night. In Friday night's loss at McGill, she scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds.

Hunter put in a pair of strong all-around performances in the Gaiters' games against McGill and Laval. On Friday against McGill, he scored ten points and led the team with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. On Saturday night, he led the Gaiters with seven rebounds and three assists, along with scoring nine points, in their 73-68 loss to Laval.

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Hermon Tesfaghebriel, Men's Basketball - Led Gaiters in scoring on both Friday (18 pts) and Saturday (17 pts)
  • Gabrielle Côté-Caouette, Women's Basketball - Led Gaiters with 12 points on Friday night at McGill.
  • Alysha McLeon, Women's Hockey - Picked up first win as a Polar Bear on Friday night
  • Marie-Ève Lemoine, Women's Basketball - Grabbed 11 rebounds on Friday - the most by a Gaiter in any game this year.
  • Ryan Steele, Men's Basketball - Shared team lead with 18 points on Friday night.
  • Bethan Chalke, Women's Basketball - Scored a career-high 12 points on Saturday night, the first double-digit game of her career.
  • Oraine Green, Men's Basketball - Recorded consecutive double-digit games (13 pts, 11 pts).
MEN’S BASKETBALL (3-9, 2-9 CIS, 0-3 QUBL)
Men's Basketball drops pair to fall to 0-3 in regular season

FRIDAY: McGILL 102, GAITERS 88 - Game Stats
A 35-point outburst by Matthew Thornhill led the McGill Redmen to a 102-88 win over the Gaiters. Thornhill shot 12-for-16 from the field, and was 7-for-10 from the line, as he keyed a high-scoring affair. For Bishop's, Steele and Hermon Tesfaghebriel tied for the team lead with 18 points each, while Oraine Green scored 13 and Tim Hunter added ten. Tesfaghebriel and Hunter tied for the team lead with seven rebounds each.

SATURDAY: LAVAL 73, GAITERS 68 - Game Stats
A 12-2 run by Laval midway through the fourth quarter gave the Rouge et Or a 73-68 win over the Gaiters at the Mitchell Gym. Jean-François Beaulieu-Maheux started the run with a three-pointer and a layup, five of his game-high 22 points. The Laval run broke open a game that had been close through most of the three previous quarters, with ten ties and 11 lead changes.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters host Concordia (7-8,7-4 CIS,2-2 QUBL) on Friday night, before travelling to UQAM (4-8,3-4 CIS,1-0 QUBL) on Saturday. Friday's game at the Mitchell Gym is set for an 8 p.m. tipoff, while Saturday's matchup in Montreal starts at 7 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (5-4, 5-4 CIS, 1-2 QUBL)
Women's Basketball downed by McGill and Laval

FRIDAY: McGILL 60, #7 GAITERS 43 - Game Stats
The Gaiters' four-game winning streak came to a screeching halt in a 60-43 loss to the Martlets. A poor shooting performance doomed the Gaiters, as they shot a season-low 26.3% from the field. Gabrielle Côté-Caouette came off the bench to lead Bishop's with 12 points, and was the only Gaiter to hit double figures, as Katy Germain was held to eight points, while Jessy Roy scored seven. Marie-Ève Lemoine grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

SATURDAY: #5 LAVAL 72, #7 GAITERS 64 - Game Stats
Bethan Chalke's free throw with 17 seconds left forced overtime, but the No. 7-ranked Bishop's Gaiters eventually fell 72-64 to the No. 5 Laval Rouge et Or. With the Gaiters trailing 61-60, Chalke make one of two free throws to tie the game at 61, the climax of a game that featured 14 ties and six lead changes. Jessy Roy led the Gaiters with 14 points and seven rebounds. Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles added 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting, while Chalke finished with 12 points and Charles added 11.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters close out the fall with a game at home to Concordia (5-9,5-7 CIS,2-2 QUBL) on Friday at 6 p.m. On Saturday, the Gaiters will head up to Montreal to face the UQAM Citadins (3-6,3-6 CIS,1-1 QUBL). Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY (1-4)
Bears go 1-2 as Shawville wins third consecutive Polar Bear Tournament title

The Bishop's Polar Bears hosted their annual tournament last weekend, and it was the Shawville Chameaux coming out on top, after a thrilling 3-2 shootout victory over the Cornwall Intermediate AA Typhoons. Mary Maglieri scored the lone shootout goal as the Chameaux avenged an 8-1 defeat on Friday night and won their third consecutive tournament championship.

The Polar Bears went 1-2 in the six-team tournament, and did not qualify for the semifinals, which saw the Typhoons down the Redwine (Sherbrooke) 2-1, while Shawville defeated The Women (Sherbrooke) 6-0.

On Friday, the Bears picked up their first win of the season, a 2-1 victory over Alexander Galt Regional High School. Erika Cook and Monica Bolduc scored for the Bears. On Saturday morning, the Beras were shut out 5-0 by Cornwall. The last game of the preliminary round saw the Bears fall 3-2 to The Women, with Sacha Vanasse-Gouchie and Katie Andrews scoring in a losing cause. Alysha McLeod played all three games in net, picking up her first win as a Polar Bear on Friday night.

The Bears look forward to next year's tournament, and would like to thank all the people who played and helped out all weekend.
