football upset highlight Gaiters weekend

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:
The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Mélanie
Ouellet-Godcharles of the Women's Basketball team, along with Kyle Exumé
of the Football team and Ryan Lethbridge of the Men's Rugby
team.
Ouellet-Godcharles led Women's Basketball to a 3-0 sweep of the
Don Grant Invitational in Moncton, N.B. last weekend. She
averaged a team-high 15.7 points per game, including a 23-point
outburst in Sunday's 90-77 win over Dalhousie.
Exumé had an
outstanding day on special teams for the Gaiters. His blocked
punt in the second quarter, the first of his career, set up in
the game-winning touchdown, and he also made a fumble recovery
and led the Gaiters with 2.5 special teams tackles.
Lethbridge led
the Men's Rugby team to a 31-0 whitewash over the Concordia
Stingers. Lethbridge scored two tries, and led from the front as
the Gaiters' pack dominated the game. The win secured a home
playoff game for the Gaiters this Friday night, against the same
Stingers.

A six-yard catch by Justin Conn keyed the Bishop’s Gaiters to a
21-16 upset of the No. 4-ranked Montreal Carabins in Quebec University
Football League action at Coulter Field. The 1,573 in attendance
saw Conn score on a perfectly-executed fake field goal, the highlight of
a day that belonged to the Gaiters’ defence and special teams.
UP NEXT: The Gaiters host the Concordia Stingers (3-4) this week
at Coulter Field. The Gaiters would advance to the QUFL playoffs
with a win, and would be eliminated with a loss. |

MEN’S BASKETBALL (1-5)
Men's Basketball winless at Ottawa tournament
Men's Basketball
made their second trip to Ottawa in as many weeks, this time to
the Jack Donohue Tip-Off Classic, and suffered three straight
losses to top-ranked opposition. On Friday, the Gaiters fell
93-67 to the Toronto Varsity Blues (6-1), while Saturday saw the
Gaiters drop a 97-55 decision to Cape Breton (2-1). On Sunday,
the Gaiters closed out the tournament with a 82-73 loss to the
hosts from Ottawa.
Fifth-year forward Damon Thomas-Anderson was named to the
All-Tournament Team.
FRIDAY:
TORONTO 93, GAITERS 67
The Gaiters opened
the tournament with a 93-67 loss to the 6-1 Toronto Varsity
Blues. The Blues, currently ranked No. 6 by cishoops.ca, led
45-29 at halftime, and steadily pulled away in the second half.
Oraine Green led the Gaiters with 15 points, while Onnex
Blackwood scored 14 and Tim McAleenan had 13. Damon
Thomas-Anderson scored nine points but had a game-high ten
rebounds.
SATURDAY: CAPE BRETON 97, GAITERS 55
The Gaiters fell 97-55 to the Cape Breton Capers on Day 2 of the Jack
Donohue Tournament in Ottawa. The Capers, who are currently ranked
eighth by cishoops.ca, led 36-24 at halftime, before
pulling away in the late stages. A pair of rookies led the Gaiters, as Onnex Blackwood
led the Gaiters with 15 points, while Oraine Greene had 11. The Gaiters close out the
tournament tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m., as they face the Ottawa
Gee-Gees.
SUNDAY:
OTTAWA 82, GAITERS 73
The Gaiters closed the House-Laughton Hoops Classic with a 82-73
loss to the host Ottawa Gee-Gees. The game was tied 32-32 at
halftime, and the Gaiters trailed by two points with two minutes
to go, before the Gee-Gees pulled away. Hermon Tesfaghebriel's
23 points and ten points were both team highs, while Jamil Abiad
and Jeremy Leonard-Smith each scored 13.
UP NEXT: Men's Basketball has their
first home action of the season this weekend, as they host a
pair of AUS teams for their Alumni Weekend. On Friday, the
Gaiters host the UPEI Panthers at 7 p.m., while on Sunday the
Gaiters will have a rematch with the Cape Breton Capers at noon. |

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (4-2)
Women's Basketball sweeps Don Grant Invitational in Moncton.
Women's Basketball swept all three games at the Don Grant
Invitational tournament in Moncton, N.B. The Gaiters were the
only team of the six participants to compile a perfect record.
Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles led the Gaiters with 15.7 points per
game, and was also stellar defensively. On Friday, the Gaiters
dropped the UNB Varsity Reds 85-69, and followed that up with a
70-59 win over Cape Breton on Saturday. On Sunday, the Gaiters
dropped the Dalhousie Tigers 90-77.
FRIDAY:
GAITERS 85, UNB 69
The Gaiters opened
the tournament on a high on Friday night, with a 85-69 win over
the UNB Varsity Reds. The Gaiters led 47-27 at halftime, and
withstood a late UNB comeback to pick up the win. The Gaiters'
quick, balanced attack resulted in five players hitting double
figures, led by Gabrielle Côté-Caouette's 16 points. Mélanie
Ouellet-Godcharles added 14 points, with Marie-Ève Lemoine
adding 13, Katy Germain netting 11 and Jessy Roy scoring 10. Roy
nearly recorded a double-double, as she made eight assists.
Amanda Sharpe scored a game-high 32 points for the Varsity Reds
in a losing cause.
SATURDAY: GAITERS 70, CAPE BRETON 59
The Gaiters picked up their second straight win, a 70-59
victory over the Cape Breton Capers. The Capers, who finished last
season ranked No. 6 in the country, trailed 42-20 at halftime, as the
Gaiters led throughout the game. The Gaiters' uptempo attack was again
on display, as four players hit double figures, led by Katy Germain' 14
points. Gabrielle Côté-Caouette
scored 12 points, while Jessy Roy scored 11 and Mélanie
Ouellet-Godcharles added ten. Roy was named the
Gaiters' player of the game, as she finished with 11 points, five
rebounds, four assists and a steal.
SUNDAY:
GAITERS 90, DALHOUSIE 77
The Gaiters completed their sweep of the tournament on Sunday
afternoon with a 90-77 win over the Dalhousie Tigers. Bishop's
led 42-35 at the half, and trailed 62-60 after three quarters.
However, the Gaiters exploded for 30 points in the fourth
quarter to run away with the game. Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles
had a career-high 23 points, along with five rebounds and five
assists. Jessy Roy scored a career-high 17 points, with six
assists and six steals, while Katy Germain scored 16 points and
Marie-Ève Lemoine added 13.Laurie Girdwood led Dalhousie with 20
poitns.
UP NEXT: Women's Basketball has
concluded their pre-season play. The regular season begins on
Friday, November 13 when the Gaiters will visit Concordia.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
(1-8-3, 7th QUSL)
Gaiters upset twice last weekend, fall into 7th place
FRIDAY:
UQAM 1, GAITERS
0
The Gaiters fell 1-0 to the UQAM Citadins on Friday night at Montreal's
Jarry Park. Lora Lehr, a substitute, scored the game's only
goal, in the 25th minute, as the Citadins picked up their first
win of the season. The Gaiters' MVP was forward Katie Wallace,
who won the honours for the second straight time. Late in the
game, the Gaiters' Katie Montelpare picked up her third yellow
card, causing her to miss Sunday's game.
SUNDAY:
CONCORDIA 1, GAITERS
0
On Sunday, the Gaiters suffered their second straight loss, this
one a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Concordia Stingers. Ali
Burgess' 26th-minute goal was the only scoring, as neither team
generated many attacks. Becky Yates made two saves in goal for
the Gaiters, while Concordia's Jesse Davis made one in picking
up the shutout. Katie Wallace was, for the third straight time,
the Gaiters' MVP.
UP NEXT: The Gaiters close out the season on Friday night at 6
p.m. (note the revised start time) against McGill, and on Sunday
at 1 p.m. at Montreal. |

MEN’S RUGBY (3-3, t-2nd QURU)
Gaiters beat Concordia, gain home field for QURU semi-final
FRIDAY: GAITERS 31, CONCORDIA 10
Ryan Lethbridge's two tries led the Gaiters to a 31-10
victory over the Concordia Stingers at Coutler Field. The win
gives the Gaiters home field advantage in their semifinal
against Concordia this week. Lethbridge scored just before
halftime to put Bishop's up 17-5 at the break, and put the game
away in the 55th minute, as he touched the ball down after the
Gaiters' pack pushed the ball over the line. Jamie Le Huquet,
Nick Johnson, and Stefan Lemieux scored the Gaiters' other
tries, as their forward pack put on a dominating display. Billy
Murphy made three conversions.

WOMEN’S RUGBY (2-4, 5th QURU)
Gaiters
hold Prom Dress
Rugby fundraiser
With the regular season having
come to an end, the Bishop's Gaiters Women's Rugby team held a
"Prom Dress Rugby" fundraiser on Sunday at Optimist Park. The
event was to raise money for the Sabina Orphanage in Uganda,
where Gaiters' centre Frances Bajdik-Bova volunteered last
winter. The Gaiters raised nearly $750 at the event, enough to
send one student to school for a year.
UP NEXT: Women's Rugby
will conclude its season with a
non-conference game on Saturday against Carleton at Optimist
Park. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. |

Gaiters go winless in final three regular season games.
THURSDAY:
McGILL 12, GAITERS 7
The Gaiters opened the weekend with a 12-7 loss at McGill.
The Gaiters trailed 6-3 at halftime and 9-3 after three
quarters. The Gaiters mounted a late charge, scoring four goals
in the game's final seven minutes, but were unable to come all
the way back. Joe Laleune led the Gaiters with two goals, while
Andrew MacKay, Mike Dube, Jesse Gatellaro, Andre Laleune and
Josh Crone each scored once.
SATURDAY:
QUEEN'S 9, GAITERS 8
The Gaiters returned home on Saturday night, only to suffer an
upset loss to the Queen's Golden Gaels. The Gaiters held a 6-2
lead at halftime, but were unable to hold off a late Queen's
charge, as the Gaels outscored Bishop's 7-2 in the final 40
minutes. Mike Dube scored five goals to lead the Gaiters, while
Josh Crone, Andrew MacKay and Brett Conway added one each.
SUNDAY:
TRENT 12, GAITERS 4
The Gaiters suffered their third straight loss on Sunday
afternoon, as Trent avenged the Gaiters' earlier win in
Peterborough. Trent led 4-1 at halftime, and pulled away with
three goals in the third and a five-goal fourth quarter. Jesse
Gattellaro scored twice for Bishop's, with Josh Crone and Mike
Dubé netting the other Gaiters' markers.
EX-GAITER
MAC ALLEN MAKES CANADIAN NATIONAL TEAM
There was some good news for the Gaiters Lacrosse team this
week, as former Gaiter Mac Allen was named to the Team Canada
30-man roster for the 2010 World Championships in Manchester,
England. Allen, who currently plays for the Rochester
Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League, was one of only
seven defenders named to the squad, which will be cut to to its
final 23-man size prior to next summer's tournament.
UP NEXT: The Gaiters hit the road for the CUFLA Quarterfinals
this week. After finished third in their division, they will
visit second-place McGill (7-3) on Friday night at 8 p.m. |

WOMEN'S HOCKEY
(0-1)
Gaiters go winless in final three regular season games.
The Polar Bears'
season got off on a losing note last Friday at the W.B. Scott
Arena, as they fell 3-2 to the Sherbrooke Junior AAs. A pair of
rookies found the twine for the Bears, as Elyse Driver and
Taylor Côté scored in their first career games. Alysha McLeod
and Natasha Snyder.
UP NEXT: The Bears
are idle this week, but return to action November 7, when they
will visit Stanstead College. |
