Rugby & Lacrosse get Homecoming wins, light week of action ahead

Weekly Release #5
October 5, 2009

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Olivier Genier of the Golf team and Katie Montelpare of the Women’s Soccer team.

Genier led the Gaiters and finished 9th among individuals at the QSSF Golf Championship, held last weekend at the Deux-Montagnes Golf Club. Genier’s finish is the first top-20 finish for a Gaiter since Trevor Dunn finished 19th in 2005. Genier shot 78-73-73 to finish with a four-round total of 300, 14 shots behind the leaders, Clément Herviou and Benoît Gordon’s.

Montelpare, a second-year defender from Montreal, was the Gaiters’ leader in their 1-0 loss at home to Sherbrooke on Friday afternoon. Her leadership and strong tackling on the Gaiters’ back line helped Bishop’s bottle up the powerful Sherbrooke attack.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (1-6-1, 7th QUSL)
Gaiters suffer narrow Homecoming loss to Sherbrooke

FRIDAY: SHERBROOKE 1, GAITERS 0
The Gaiters fell 1-0 to the Sherbrooke Vert & Or in the evening's first contest. Sherbrooke held the early edge in play, and Chloé Belhumeur-Limoges broke through and deked around the Gaiters' Becky Yates to net her sixth goal of the season. Her goal in the 16th minute held up as the winner, as the defences took hold from that point. Yates, making her second straight start in goal for the Gaiters, made six saves and was named the Player of the Game. Belhumeur-Limoges took the honours for Sherbrooke.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters have only one game this week as they visit Sherbrooke (5-1-0) for the return match of the home-and-home series. The Gaiters and Vert et Or will face off on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the U de S stadium.

MEN’S RUGBY (1-3, 3rd QURU)
Gaiters hit the win column with shutout of Sherbrooke

FRIDAY: GAITERS 32, SHERBROOKE 0:
Men's Rugby picked up their first win of the season in emphatic fashion with a 32-0 shutout of the Sherbrooke Vert et Or. The Gaiters dominated from the opening kickoff, as the pack moved the ball downfield quickly, and Matt Pereira put the ball down in the third minute to open the scoring. Billy Murphy's conversion, the first of his three, put Bishop's up 7-0 with only four minutes gone. Ryan Lethbridge scored the only other try in the first half, while a 38-yard penalty goal by Murphy on the stroke of halftime gave Bishop's a 17-0 lead. Jamie Le Huquet and Lethbridge scored second-half tries for the Gaiters, while a second Murphy penalty goal rounded out the scoring.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters are idle this week, but return to action on Sunday, October 18 when they visit Sherbrooke.

Golf finishes 8th overall, Genier cracks the Top Ten

Golf’s season came to a close last week at the QSSF Provincial Championships in Deux Montagnes. On the team front, the Gaiters were unable to make up ground on the teams ahead of them, and remained in eighth place overall.

Individually, Olivier Genier led the Gaiters, as he shot 78-73-73 to finish with a four-round total of 300, good for a tie for 9th place, 14 strokes behind the champion, Clément Herviou of Laval. The only other Gaiter to make the cut was Alex Aubry, who finished 34th with a four-round total of 329. James Laing shot 80-82 to finish in 42nd spot, while Dane Fitzpatrick was tied for 44th and Mark Warnholtz finished 58th.

LACROSSE (5-1, 1st CUFLA East)
Gaiters edge McGill in defensive struggle

THURSDAY: GAITERS 7, McGILL 6
After the previous weekend’s goal-fest, it was much tougher sledding for the Gaiters’ attack on Thursday night. The Gaiters led 4-2 after three quarters, before McGill scored three goals to tie the game at 5-5 with just under eight minutes to play. Mike Dubé’s power-play goal with 4:03 to go broke the tie, while Jesse Gattelaro’s goal with 2:31 left proved to be the winner. McGill scored with 2:00 left to cause some nail-biting on the Bishop’s bench, but the Gaiter defence held on for the win. Joe Laleuene led the Gaiters with four points (3G, 1A), while Dubé scored twice, and André Laleune and Gattellaro had one goal each. Keegan Durovick picked up the win, as he faced 19 shots.
