ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Harrison Maloney and Steven Turner of the Men's Football team along with Steph Burnett of the Women's Soccer team.

Maloney, a second-year defensive back from Thurso, Que., and Turner, a fourth-year slotback/kick returner from Brampton, Ont., were both named QUFL Players of the Week for leading the Gaiters to a 25-20 win over McGill on Friday. Maloney made an interception on McGill's second play of the game, and knocked down a pass on their last play. Turner scored the game's first touchdown on a 61-yard punt return - his second in as many weeks.

Burnett, a second-year forward from Durham, Conn., scored two of the Gaiters' three goals last weekend, as they tied UQAM and defeated Concordia. She scored the game-tying goal in Friday's 1-1 draw with the Citadins, and scored the game-winner in the 85th minute of Sunday's 2-1 victory over the Stingers.

Gaiters down McGill for first win of year, No. 1 Laval on tap on Friday

FRIDAY: Gaiters 25, McGill 20 - Full release
Olivier Mongeau’s touchdown catch at 1:43 of the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as the Bishop’s Gaiters edged the McGill Redmen 25-20 in Quebec University Football League action tonight at Percival Molson Stadium. The 3,091 fans in attendance saw the Gaiters pick up their first win of the season in a game that featured 11 turnovers, and was not decided until the final 16 seconds.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters' road swing continues, this time in Quebec City, as the Gaiters visit the No. 1-ranked Laval Rouge et Or (3-0). Laval downed Montreal 30-8 at home last week. Kickoff at the PEPS stadium is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (1-2-1, 6th QUSL)
Gaiters go undefeated, move up into sixth place

FRIDAY: GAITERS 1, UQAM 1
Women's Soccer picked up their first points of the season with a 1-1 draw against the UQAM Citadins. The Citadins opened the scoring in the 33rd minute on Lora Lehr's first goal of the season. The Gaiters tied the score up in the 72nd minute on Steph Burnett's second goal of the season, on a pass from Katie Montelpare. Erin Pollon was the Gaiters' player of the game, while Lehr earned the honours for the Citadins.

SUNDAY: GAITERS 2, CONCORDIA 1
Steph Burnett's goal in the 85th minute gave the Women's Soccer a 2-1 victory over the Concordia Stingers in Montreal today. Bishop's opened the scoring as Katie Montelpare fired home a free kick in the game's 35th minute. Concordia tied the game midway through the second half as Johanna Van der Veen beat Bishop's goalkeeper Koula Trichas. However, a brilliant through ball by Christine Vidal sent Burnett through the Stingers defence, and she made no mistake in scoring her third goal of the season, securing all three points for the Gaiters. Burnett was the Gaiters' player of the game, while Van der Veen won the honours for Concordia.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters visit McGill (2-2-0) on Friday at 8 p.m. The Martlets defeated Concordia 5-0 and UQAM 1-0 last weekend after suffering a pair of losses to open the year. On Sunday, the Gaiters will host the No. 2-ranked Montreal Carabins (4-0-0). The Carabins have only conceded two goals in four games this season. Kickoff at Coulter Field is set for 1 p.m.

MEN’S RUGBY (0-2, T-3rd QURU)
Gaiters fall to McGill in first half of home-and-home series

FRIDAY: McGILL 57, GAITERS 5
Men's Rugby fell 57-5 to the McGill Redmen on Friday. A pair of converted tries gave McGill a 14-0 halftime lead. No. 8 Ryan Lethbridge scored the Gaiters' only try of the game in the 46th minute, as they narrowed the gap to 14-5. However, McGill cruised with six second-half tries, including three in the game's final ten minutes. Alistair Craw led the Redmen with 23 points (three tries, four conversions), while Mike Davis scored three tries.

SUNDAY: GAITERS 38, OTTAWA 25 (NC)
The Gaiters rebounded with a non-conference win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday afternoon at Coulter Field. Fly-half Billy Murphy led the Gaiters with 13 points on three penalty goals and two conversions, while Braydon McLean, Dave Murphy, Nick Korney, Ryan Lethbridge and Pierre-Eric Milhorat each scored tries.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters complete the series with McGill (2-0) this Saturday afternoon at Molson Stadium. The Gaiters' last visit to Molson Stadium was the 2008 QURU Championship, where they fell 21-0 to the Redmen. Kickoff for this Saturday's game is set for 1 p.m.

WOMEN’S RUGBY (0-2, T-4th QURU)
Gaiters drop home opener to Ottawa

Women's Rugby dropped their second straight game, falling 28-7 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The Gee-Gees took an early 8-0 lead, but Meredith Evans' first try of the season, and Sue Magwood's conversion put the margin back to 8-7 at halftime. The Gee-Gees ran off 20 unanswered second-half points to pick up their second win of the season. Five different players scored for Ottawa, with Lana Dingwall's eight points (one try, one penalty goal) leading the way. Allison McCormick, Karen Snell and Natasha Watcham-Roy scored tries for Ottawa, while Amber Stoffer kicked a penalty goal. Magwood led the Gaiters, while Jacquie Laidler also had a strong performance in the Gaiters' front row. The Gaiters (0-2) visit McGill (0-1) on Sunday, Sept. 27.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters head up to Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue to play the McGill Martlets (0-2) on Sunday. McGill was dumped 34-0 by Laval last week, after falling 24-5 to Ottawa in their season-opener. Kickoff at McGill's Macdonald College campus is set for 1 p.m.

GOLF (1321, 8th QSSF)
Gaiters remain in eighth place after second weekend

The second weekend of the Golf season took place last weekend at the Le Marthelnois club in Trois-Rivières, and the Gaiters remained in eighth place despite a difficult couple of days.

After posting aggregate scores of 318 and 329 the week before, the Gaiters ballooned to 349 on Saturday, with only Olivier Genier breaking 80. On Sunday, the Gaiters rebounded to post an aggregate score of 325. The Gaiters are currently in eighth place with a four-round total of 1321, 19 strokes behind seventh-place Sherbrooke and only 31 strokes out of fourth place. Laval continues to lead with a 1219 aggregate, 39 strokes clear of second-place Montreal.

Olivier Genier was the low man for the weekend for the Gaiters, finishing with a two-day total of 155 (77-78), while Dane Fitzpatrick posted a score of 166 (89-76). James Miles scored 174 (90-84), while David Arksey (189) and John Miles (190) trailed behind.

The individual championship is determined by taking each players' low score from the preliminary rounds, and adding them to the three rounds at the Provincial Championship. On that basis, Laing and Genier and Fitzpatrick will bring in their low rounds of 76, six strokes off the lead.s

UP NEXT: Golf is idle this week. The Provincial championships are set for October 2-4 at Deux Montagnes, Que.

LACROSSE (3-1, 1st CUFLA East)
Gaiters earn pair of wins in Peterborough

SATURDAY: GAITERS 9, QUEEN'S 7
On Saturday, the Gaiters picked up their second straight win, as they edged the Queen's Golden Gaels 9-7 at the CUFLA's season-opening jamboree in Peterborough, Ont. The Gaiters led 3-1 after the first half, 5-4 at halftime and 7-6 after three quarters. Joe Laleune, Andrew MacKay, Josh Crone and Jesse Gattelaro had two goals each, while Chris Harper added a single. Crone led the Gaiters with seven loose balls, while Andre Laleune continued to be strong on faceoff. Keegan Durovick won his second straight game, as he made 10 saves for the Gaiters.

SUNDAY: GAITERS 9, TRENT 6
The Gaiters picked up the weekend sweep with a 9-6 win over the Trent Excalibur - Trent's first-ever loss on home field. The Gaiters dominated the opening half, leading 4-2 after the first quarter, and 7-3 after 40 minutes, and held kept the Excalibur in check in the last 40 minutes. Andrew MacKay led the Gaiters with four points (3G, 1A), while Jesse Gattellaro (1G, 2A) and Joe Laleune (0G 3A) scored three each. Chris Harper and Andre Laleune scored two goals each, with Greg Harnett's goal rounding out the scoring. Keegan Durovick made eight saves for the Gaiters to get the win. R.J. Lawrence led in the loose ball department with five.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters have just one game this week, at home to the Toronto Varsity Blues (0-2) on Sunday at Coulter Field. Toronto suffered a 17-3 home loss to McGill on Sunday, and fell13-9 to Carleton on Saturday. The opening draw at Coulter Field is set for noon.
