Difficult opening
weekend for Gaiters, several home openers on tap
Weekly
Release #2
September 15, 2009
|
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:
The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Andre Laleune of
the Men's Lacrosse team and Katie Montelpare of the Women's
Soccer team.
Laleune, a rookie from Halifax, N.S., was the Gaiters' best
player throughout their season-opening home-and-home series
against Carleton last weekend. In Sunday's 11-10 win at Coulter
Field, he assisted on the eventual game-winning power-play goal.
He also distinguished himself with excellent work on faceoffs.
Montelpare, a native of Montreal, was the Gaiters' MVP in their
game on Sunday at Laval, thanks to her solid defensive play. The
rookie defender has shown that she will be a pillar of the
Gaiters' back line this season.
HONOUR ROLL:
-
Steven Turner, Football - Scored a 68-yard punt return
touchdown against Laval on Friday.
-
Stephanie Burnett - Scored the Gaiters' only goal and was
the team MVP on Friday night at UQTR.
-
James Laing, Golf - Tied for Gaiters' low score last weekend
at Milby.
-
Olivier Genier, Golf - Tied for Gaiters' low score last
weekend at Milby.
-
Matt Pereira, Men's Rugby - Scored a try in Friday's rugby
game at Concordia
-

in two games last weekend.

rugby game at Concordia

last weekend.

on Friday night.

FOOTBALL
(0-2, T-5th QUFL)
Gaiters fall at home to No. 1 Laval, visit McGill on Friday
SATURDAY: No. 1 Laval 45, Gaiters 6 -
Full release
Sébastien Lévesque’s two touchdowns led the No. 1-ranked Laval
Rouge et Or to a 45-6 victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters on
Saturday at Coulter Field. A crowd of 2,188 saw Lévesque run 11
times for 171 yards, including a 64-yard scoring run late in the
first quarter.
UP NEXT: The Gaiters head to Montreal on Friday night to take on
the McGill Redmen (1-1). McGill scored an upset 29-11 victory
over Sherbrooke last week. Kickoff at Molson Stadium is set for
7 p.m. |

WOMEN’S SOCCER
(0-2, T-5th QUSL)
Gaiters drop pair on the road last weekend, home opener set for
Friday
FRIDAY: UQTR 3, GAITERS 1
The Gaiters opened the season with a 3-1 loss to the UQTR
Patriotes in
Trois-Rivières
on Friday night. Steph Burnett (Durham, Conn.) had the only goal
for the Gaiters. While the Gaiters played well in the second
half, they were unable to take advantage of their scoring
chances. UQTR took a 1-0 lead late in the dying stages of first
half on Marie-Michèle
Appointee’s first goal of the night. She would finish with a hat
trick for the opportunistic Patriotes. Burnett was named the
Gaiters' MVP.
SUNDAY: LAVAL 6, GAITERS 0
With three starters sitting out due to injury, it was a depleted
Gaiters lineup that was shut out 6-0 by Laval in Quebec City.
Gabrielle Verret led Laval with four goals, while Kathy Gosselin
and Marie-Michèle Vallée had one each. Laval had a 2-0 lead at
halftime, and pulled away in the second half as the young
Gaiters started to tire. The Gaiters' player of the game was
Katie Montelpare (Montreal, Que.), who had a solid game
defensively.
UP NEXT: The Gaiters' home schedule opens on Friday at 4 p.m.
with a match against the UQAM Citadins (0-2). The Citadins were
also swept last weekend by UQTR and Laval, suffering a 3-1 loss
to Laval at Jarry Park on Friday, and a 2-1 defeat at
Trois-Rivières on Sunday.
On Sunday, the Gaiters will visit Concordia (0-2). Kickoff is
set for 1 p.m. at Concordia Stadium. The Stingers conceded ten
goals last weekend in season-opening losses to Sherbrooke and
Montreal. |

MEN’S RUGBY (0-1, T-3rd QURU)
Gaiters suffer heartbreaking loss at Concordia
The Men's Rugby season opened on a disappointing note, as the
Gaiters fell 17-15 to Concordia on a last-minute try. The
Gaiters led through most of the match, but a series of unforced
errors in the game's final three minutes allowed the Stingers to
push the ball over for the winning points. Jamie Le Huquet and
Matt Pereira each scored tries for Bishop's, while Billy Murphy
added a conversion and a penalty goal.

Le Huquet's report from "Inside the Scrum" here....
UP NEXT: The Gaiters' home opener is this weekend, as they face
the McGill Redmen (1-0) at Coulter Field. Friday night's game is
set to kick off at 8 p.m. McGill, the two-time defending
provincial champions, downed Sherbrooke 40-13 last weekend. |
|
WOMEN’S RUGBY (0-1, T-4th QURU)
Gaiters shut out at Concordia
Women's Rugby opened the season with a comprehensive shutout
loss at Concordia. The Gaiters were unable to get any ball
movement on the Stingers, who were led by two-time All-Canadian
Laura Belvedere. Belvedere scored four tries for the home side.
The play of Jackie Laidler (North Vancouver, B.C.) was a bright
spot in an otherwise frustrating season opener.
UP NEXT: The Gaiters' home schedule opens this Friday at 6 p.m.,
when they will face the Ottawa Gee-Gees (1-0). Ottawa opened the
season with a 24-5 win over McGill |

GOLF
(650, 8th QSSF)
Gaiters eighth after Milby Open
Golf hosted the season-opening Milby Open last weekend, and
finished the two rounds in eighth place in the QSSF standings
with an aggregate score of 650. The Gaiters had a solid day on
Saturday, as they were in sixth place with a score of 321, but
Sunday was less kind to the home side. Laval won the weekend
with an aggregate score of 587, a whopping 30 strokes ahead of
second-place Montreal. The Gaiters' 650 aggregate is six strokes
behind seventh-place ETS, but only 14 strokes out of fourth
place, currently held by Sherbrooke.
James Laing and Olivier Genier were the low scorers for the
Gaiters, finishing with identical scores of 157 (76-81) over the
two rounds. They finished in a tie for 17th place overall, 15
shots off the pace set by Laval's Mathieu Gingras. Dane
Fitzpatrick shot 163 (81-82) and finished 31st, while Alex Aubry
was 49th with 172 (85-87). The other Gaiters included Mathieu
Desmarais (88-85--173), Francis Cossette (91-89--180) and Mark
Warnholtz (104-90--194).
On the women's side, Alexi Drolet was forced to withdraw due to
an injury.
UP NEXT: Rounds 3 & 4 of the QSSF season are set for this
weekend at the Marthelnois Golf Club in Trois-Rivières. Play is
scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. |

LACROSSE
(1-1, T-1st CUFLA East)
Gaiters squeak out hard-fought split with Ravens
SATURDAY: CARLETON 11, GAITERS 10
On Saturday, the Gaiters learned the hard way that they have to
play all 80 minutes in order to win. The Gaiters trailed 5-1
after the first quarter, 7-2 at halftime and 9-3 after three
periods. In the fourth quarter, Bishop's mounted a comeback, as
they broke out for seven goals, but it was not enough, as the
Ravens held on for the 11-10 victory. Mike Dubé, Joseph Laleune,
and Jesse Gattelaro scored two goals each for the Gaiters, while
Josh Crone, Andrew MacKay, Andre Laleune, and Jeremy McNaughton
added singles.
SUNDAY: GAITERS 11, CARLETON 10
In Sunday's return match at Coulter Field, the Gaiters again got
off to a slow start, trailing 7-3 at halftime. This time,
however, the Gaiters turned it on a little earlier and outscored
Carleton 4-2 in the third period to cut the lead to 9-7. The
Gaiters went ahead for good Josh Crone's power-play marker with
4:07 left in the contest. Mike Dubé finished with four goals,
while Josh Crone had three goals and an assist and Greg Harnett
scored twice. Singles from Andrew MacKay and Christopher Harper
rounded out the Gaiters' scoring. Keegan Durovick made several
key saves to keep the Gaiters in the game.
UP NEXT: The Gaiters will head to Peterborough for the CUFLA's
season-opening jamboree this weekend. Bishop's will face Queen's
(0-2) at 4 p.m. on Saturday, before returning to play the hosts
from Trent (1-0) at noon on Sunday. Trent downed Queen's in
their season-opener, while the Golden Gaels also lost at home to
McGill last weekend. |
