Gaiters open playoffs with
return trip to Laval March 2, 2010
Game Notes (pdf)
TOMORROW’S GAME: The
fourth-seeded Bishop’s Gaiters open the playoffs with a visit to the
top-seeded Laval Rouge et Or.
PURPLE TWEETS:
Follow the Gaiters with Twitter updates on the Gaiters’ website (www.ubishops.ca/gaiters)
or www.twitter.com/BishopsGaiters
NOTHIN’ BUT NET: Wednesday’s game will be webcast in French on http://www.rougeetor.tv.
THE RECORDS: The Gaiters are 12-13 overall and finished tied for
fourth in the QUBL at 6-10 with Concordia. The Gaiters won the fourth
seed in the playoffs based on their 3-1 record against Concordia this
year. Laval finished the regular season with an 18-6 record (18-5 vs.
CIS) and their 13-3 league record put them five games ahead of
second-place UQAM.
LAST TIME OUT: A three-pointer with 13.5 seconds left by Elyse Jobin
broke a 53-53 tie, giving Laval a 56-53 victory over the Gaiters on
Saturday at the PEPS gymnasium. Jobin finished with a team-high 14
points, including a trio of three-pointers. The Gaiters put in a strong
defensive performance, as they held Laval to 39.6% shooting from the
field, forced 27 Rouge et Or turnovers and outrebounded Laval 44-37.
Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles led the Gaiters with a game-high 15 points,
including three three-pointers. Annick Stephanny Charles picked up eight
points, three steals and a career-high eight rebounds. Marie-Ève Lemoine
also scored eight, on 4-for-6 shooting.
THE SERIES:
This will be the fifth meeting of the year between the Rouge et Or and
the Gaiters, and the fourth matchup in the past six weeks. While Laval
has won all four games, it is worth noting that one game (Nov. 21 at
Lennoxville) was decided in overtime, and the last game (Feb. 27 at
Laval) was only decided on the final possession. The Rouge et Or holds a
26-11 lead in the series since 2002-03, and an 8-1 lead in the playoffs.
SCOUTING THE ROUGE ET OR: Laval has
been in the CIS Top Ten all season, falling to the No. 8 rank this week
after their loss to Concordia and their narrow escape against the
Gaiters. They hold down the league’s top ranking both in offence (67.9 ppg) and defence (61.4 ppg). They lead the CIS in free throw percentage
(78.2%), defensive rebounds (29.7/game) and blocked shots (5.2/game).
Marie-Michelle Genois finished second in the QUBL in scoring (13.8 ppg)
and led the league with 9.1 rebounds per game. Elyse Jobin is 9th
in the league in both scoring (11.3 ppg) and rebounds (4.7 rpg), while
Chanelle St-Amour is 10th
on the league scoring list (11.2 ppg) and tied for fourth with 2.3
assists per game. Genois, St-Amour and Jobin are all members of various
Basketball Canada national teams.
HEAD-TO-HEAD: Through the
four games with Laval, the Gaiters have been led by Mélanie
Ouellet-Godcharles, who averaged 10 points per game, while Marie-Ève
Lemoine averaged 9.5 and Katy Germain 9.0. The Gaiters’ leading
rebounder has been Annick Stephanny Charles, with 5.0 per game. Laval
has been led by Elyse Jobin, who averaged 15.3 points in four games,
while Marie-Pascale Nadeau scoring 13.5. The battle to watch will be on
the boards, where Laval has outrebounded Bishop’s by 2.2 per game, well
below the Rouge et Or’s usual 6.6 rpg advantage.
ALL-STAR AGAIN: Fourth-year
swingman Katy Germain was named a QUBL First Team All-Star for the
second straight year. This year, she averaged 12.1 points, 4.3 rebounds
and 1.8 steals per game.
THAT’S MY BALL!: Annick
Stephanny Charles led the QUBL with 2.4 steals per game, while Katy
Germain was third with 1.81 steals, and Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles tied
for fourth with 1.75 thefts.
WICKED WEDNESDAY: This will
be the second Wednesday game for the Gaiters this year. Their only
previous mid-week game was a 62-52 win over McGill on January 6.
UP NEXT:
If the Gaiters win tonight, they would play at either UQAM or McGill in
the QUBL Championship on Saturday, March 6. Tipoff is tentatively set
for 7 p.m. |
