............... HEADLINES Strong defence undermined by poor shooting in Gaiters' women's basketball loss to Laval February 27, 2010 QUEBEC CITY – A three-pointer with 13.5 seconds left by Elyse Jobin broke a 53-53 tie, giving the No. 7-ranked Laval Rouge et Or a 56-53 Quebec University Basketball League victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters tonight at the PEPS gymnasium. Jobin finished with a team-high 14 points, including a trio of three-pointers. With the win, Laval finishes the regular season with a 13-3 record (19-7 overall, 19-5 vs. CIS). Bishop’s drops to 12-13 overall (12-13 CIS) and finished fourth in the QUBL with a 6-10 record. The Bishop’s loss sets up a rematch in the QUBL semifinals between the fourth-seeded Gaiters and the top-seeded Rouge et Or. The Gaiters put in a strong defensive performance, as they held Laval to 39.6% shooting from the field, forced 27 Rouge et Or turnovers and outrebounded Laval 44-37. However, their downfall was by poor shooting on the offensive end, as the Gaiters shot only 29.9% (20-67) from the field, and only 19% (4-for-21) from three-point range, well below their season averages of 38.1% and 29.2%, respectively. Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) led the Gaiters with a game-high 15 points, including three three-pointers. Annick Stephanny Charles (Laval, Que.) picked up eight points, three steals and a career-high eight rebounds. Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) also scored eight, on 4-for-6 shooting. Jobin was the only Rouge et Or player in double figures, as Chanelle Saint-Amour was held to nine points, and Marie-Michele Genois scored only six. Myriam Lamarre and Sandrine Ducruc each grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. The Gaiters trailed 11-10 after the first quarter, and 30-25 at halftime. Laval took their largest lead of the night late in the third quarter, as another Jobin three-pointer put the Rouge et Or up 45-35. The Gaiters chipped the lead back down to five points at 45-40 by the end of the quarter. The Gaiters completed the comeback halfway through the fourth, as a Charles’ layup put the Gaiters up 51-50, their first lead since a 9-6 lead in the early stages, with 4:48 left. Another Jobin triple put the home side back in front 53-51 with 3:23 left, but Ouellet-Godcharles tied the game back up at 53-53 with a layup at 3:02. However, that was the last time the Gaiters found the net, as their last six possessions resulted in three missed shots and three turnovers. The Gaiters’ next action will be the QUBL semifinal on Wednesday night at the PEPS against the Rouge et Or.
