HEADLINES Gaiters clinch playoff spot with win over Citadins February 26, 2010 LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop's Gaiters booked their ticket to the Quebec University Basketball League with a 63-53 win over the UQAM Citadins tonight at the Mitchell Gym. The win assured the Gaiters (12-12, 12-12 CIS, 6-9 QUBL) of at least a fourth-place finish, and kept alive their hopes of moving up to third spot. UQAM (13-12, 13-12 CIS, 8-7 QUBL) had previously clinched second place in the league. The Gaiters were led fourth-year guard Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.), who scored a game-high 16 points, and had team highs with three assists and four steals. The only other Gaiter in double figures was Gabrielle Côté-Caouette (Quebec City, Que.), who came off the bench to score 13 points. Katy Germain (Val d'Or, Que.) and Bethan Chalke (North Vancouver, B.C.) each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. UQAM was led by 15 points from Sherbrooke native Jessica Bibeau-Côté, while Stephanie Youakim added 14. Irline Noël scored eight points, and added a game-high 12 rebounds. The Gaiters got off to a slow start, as UQAM took an early 12-9 lead, but rebounded with a 12-6 run at the end of the quarter to pull to within three, and the UQAM lead was 20-15 after the first quarter. A three-pointer by Germain tied the game up at 24-24, but Bishop's was unable to break through the in the first half. The Citadins held a narrow 30-28 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, Bishop's took their first lead at 6:30 on a jumper by Côté-Caouette that made the score 34-33 for the Gaiters. After UQAM had pulled back out to a 37-34 lead, the Gaiters ended the quarter with a 10-0 lead, highlighted by a pair of Côté-Caouette layups, to stretch their lead to 44-37 after the third quarter. The Gaiters maintained their lead in the fourth quarter, as UQAM could get no closer than five points down. While UQAM did pull to within five points at 58-53 with 1:22 left, the Gaiters hit five of six free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory. The game marked for final regular-season home game for three Gaiters: fifth-year forward Robyn Wilson (Vancouver, B.C.), fourth-year guard Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.), as well as Ouellet-Godcharles. The Gaiters will close out the regular season tomorrow night as they visit the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec City.
