February 20, 2010

Box Score

LENNOXVILLE – The Concordia Stingers kept their playoff hopes alive as they came from behind to score a 68-57 victory over the host Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League action tonight. The Gaiters led by as many as eight points, and 31-30 at halftime, but they surrendered the lead late in the second quarter, and could not get it back.

The Gaiters were hamstrung by foul trouble throughout the game, as they committed a season-high 24 fouls, as Concordia went 17-for-25 from the free throw line. Conversely, the Stingers committed only nine fouls, and the Gaiters were 3-for-7 from the line.

After tonight’s game, the Gaiters (5-9 QUBL, 11-12 overall & CIS) and Stingers (5-10 overall, 10-16 CIS, 10-18 overall) are now tied for the fourth and final QUBL playoff spot.

The Stingers were led by 15 points by Magalie Beaulieu, while Kristin Portwine added 13 and Jill Verhesen recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, along with a game-high five assists.

The Gaiters were led by a pair of 16-point outbursts by Gabrielle Côté-Caouette (Quebec City, Que.) and Katy Germain (Val d’Or, Que.). Marie-Ève Lemoine’s 12 points, her third double-digit game in the last four, rounded out the Gaiters leading scorers, while rookie centre Elizabeth Coolen (Halifax, N.S.) led the Gaiters with a career-high eight rebounds.

The Gaiters got off to a strong start, forcing six Concordia turnovers in the game’s first 3:16, as they stormed out to an early 8-0 lead. However, that was the high point for the home side, as the Stingers only committed 12 more turnovers through the rest of the game. The Stingers used an 8-4 run to cut the lead to 12-10 two minutes later, and the Gaiters led 16-14 after the first quarter.

Concordia took their first lead of the contest at 19-18 on a three-pointer by Andréanne Grégoire-Boudreau at 8:56 of the second. The second quarter featured five lead changes and four ties before a Portwine layup broke a 28-28 tie with 1:28 to go, putting Concordia ahead for good. The Stingers led 31-30 at halftime.

After a layup by Lemoine cut the Concordia lead to 37-35 at 6:01 of the third, the Stingers went on a 6-0 run to take an eight-point lead, their largest to that point. The Gaiters could not put a run of their own together, and Concordia led 51-42 after three quarters. Concordia went 7-for-9 from the free-throw line in the period.

The Stingers led by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter, as the Gaiters’ second-half shooting woes continued. Bishop’s shot 32.4% in the half, after shooting 41.9% in the first half.

The Gaiters will return to action next Friday, as they host the UQAM Citadins (13-11 overall, 13-11 CIS, 8-6 QUBL) for Seniors’ Night. Tipoff at the Mitchell Gym is set for 6 p.m.
