Ouellet-Godcharles’ 16 points leads Gaiters to women’s basketball win over McGill

February 19, 2010

Box Score

LENNOXVILLE – Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) scored 16 points to lead the Bishop’s Gaiters to a 64-54 victory over the McGill Martlets in Quebec University Basketball League women’s action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. Her game-high performance was highlighted by a pair of consecutive three-pointers early in the fourth quarter that gave the Gaiters a 49-44 lead that they did not relinquish.

The win snaps the Gaiters’ four-game losing streak, and they improve to 5-8 in QUBL play (11-11 overall). Bishop’s is now alone in fourth place, two points ahead of Concordia (4-10). McGill drops to 6-9 in league play (11-13 overall) and remains in third spot, two points ahead of Bishop’s. The McGill loss, combined with UQAM’s win over Concordia, allowed UQAM (8-6) to clinch second place in the league.

Ouellet-Godcharles hit four three-pointers as her 16 points led all scorers. Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) scored 12 points and tied her career high with five assists, while Robyn Wilson (Vancouver, B.C.) scored ten points.

McGill had four players in double digits, led by 14 points by Marie-Ève Martin, who also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and made five assists. Nathifa Weekes, Stephanie Bergeron and Anneth Him-Lazarenko each scored ten points, with Him-Lazarenko going 4-for-5 from the field.

The Gaiter used their strong inside game to take a 14-11 first quarter lead, scoring their first six field goals from inside the paint. Bishop’s stretched their lead to as many as 12 in the second quarter, as a Ouellet-Godcharles trey put the Gaiters up 26-14 with 3:00 left in the half. Five late points by Him-Lazarenko allowed McGill to cut the halftime lead to 30-21.

The Martlets mounted a comeback early in the third, as they used a 9-0 run to tie the game at 30-30. Martin scored six straight points to put McGill up 39-35 at 4:15 of the third, but layups by Elizabeth Coolen (Halifax, N.S.) and Wilson tied the game back up at 39, and the Martlets led 44-43 after three periods.

Ouellet-Godcharles’ two three-pointers to open the fourth quarter keyed a 10-0 run that put Bishop’s up 53-44 with 6:27 left. While Martlets could get no closer than five points down in the late stages, they did keep the margin of victory below 13 points, allowing them to retain the tie-breaking advantage over the Gaiters.

The Martlets close out their regular season next Saturday (Feb. 27) at UQAM. The Gaiters’ homestand continues tomorrow night, as they take on the Concordia Stingers at the Mitchell Gym. If the Gaiters win, they will clinch a playoff spot and eliminate the Stingers. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m., and the game will be webcast live on http://www.ssncanada.ca.
