February 13, 2010

Box Score

LENNOXVILLE – Elyse Jobin’s 22 points, including six three-pointers, led the No. 7-ranked Laval Rouge et Or to a 79-61 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League women’s action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. The second-year guard shot 8-for-10 from the field, and 6-for8 from three-point range, as the Rouge et Or picked up their third straight victory. The loss drops the Gaiters to 4-8 in league play, 10-11 overall, and they remain tied with idle Concordia for fourth place. Laval improves to 12-2 in the league (18-6 overall), and has already sewn up clinched the league pennant.

Jobin’s 22 points led all scorers, while Sandrine Ducruc came off the bench to score 16 points, while Marie-Pascale Nadeau added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Chanelle St-Amour made a game-high six assists, but was held off the scoreboard.

The Gaiters were led by 18 points by Katy Germain (Val d’Or, Que.), including 4-for-8 from three-point range. Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) and Annick Stephanny Charles (Laval, Que.) scored ten points each, with Charles adding a team-high four assists. Fifth-year forward Robyn Wilson (Vancouver, B.C.) grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds.

Jobin’s first two three-pointers of the night staked Laval to an early 10-2 lead at 6:14 of the first quarter, but a pair of treys by Germain helped the Gaiters cut the margin to 13-10 as they went on an 8-3 run in 1:13, and the Rouge et Or led 18-15 after the first quarter.

The Gaiters came all the way back in the second quarter, and a pair of Charles free throws gave Bishop’s their first lead of the contest at 24-23. The lead changed hands eight times in the quarter, before Laval scored the half’s last eight points to take a 38-31 lead.

Lemoine cut the lead to 38-37 with a pair of layups early in the third quarter, but the Gaiters could not regain the lead. Jobin rattled off five straight points for Laval to push the lead back out to six points at 43-37. The Gaiters could not chip away at the lead, and Laval led 54-48 after three periods.

The Rouge et Or pulled away in the fourth quarter, as the Gaiters shot only 4-for-14 from the field in the quarter. A 10-2 Laval run over three minutes midway through the quarter was the decisive blow.

Laval shot 53.7% from the field (29-54), while the Gaiters finished at 35.6%. The teams each grabbed 33 rebounds, while Laval committed 23 turnovers, to the Gaiters’ 17.

The Gaiters are back in action on Friday, February 19 as they host the McGill Martlets (11-12, 11-12 CIS, 6-8 QUBL). Tipoff is set for 6 p.m., and the game will be webcast live at http://www.ssncanada.ca.
