............... HEADLINES Balanced attack leads UQAM to women's basketball victory over Gaiters February 12, 2010 MONTREAL – The UQAM Citadins used a balanced attack to notch a 75-62 win over the Bishop's Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League women's action tonight at the UQAM Sports Centre. Four Citadins scored in double figures, as the hosts took the lead late in the first quarter and led through the rest of the contest. The loss, the Gaiters' third straight, drops them to 10-10 overall (4-7 QUBL). UQAM improves to 7-6 in the regular season (12-11 overall), and remains alone in second place in the league. Jessica Bibeau-Côté’s 14 points led UQAM, while Karine Boudrias scored 13 and 12 points each from Stephanie Youakim and Michelle Auger-Bellemare rounded out the Citadins’ scoring leaders. Annick Stephanny Charles (Laval, Que.) scored a career-high 14 points, including 10 in the first half to lead the Gaiters. Rookie forward Bethan Chalke (North Vancouver, B.C.) scored 11 points, one off her career high, while Robyn Wilson (Vancouver, B.C.) finished with nine points and ten rebounds, one point short of a double-double. The Gaiters got off to a strong start, as Wilson scored the game's first five points, part of a 7-2 run in the game's first 2:30. UQAM came back to tie the game at 9-9, and led 21-19 after the first quarter. The Gaiters' first-quarter form did not last, as they made only two field goals in the second quarter, and fell behind 38-27 after 20 minutes. Bishop's shot 31.3% from the field in the first half, and struggled at the free-throw line, hitting only six of their 13 attempts. The Gaiters mounted a comeback early in the third, as a layup and a three-point shot by Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) keyed a 12-4 Gaiter run. A three-point play by Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) cut the margin to six halfway through the period. However, UQAM made six straight free throws to push the lead back into double digits, and they led 55-43 after three quarters. The Gaiters' shooting woes continued early in the fourth quarter, as UQAM took their largest lead of the night at 64-44. Midway through the period, Bishop’s regained their scoring touch, and Lemoine cut the lead to 66-56 with 3:52 left. However, the Gaiters could draw no closer, as three-pointers by Bibeau-Cote and Boudrias put the game away. The Gaiters shot 33.8% from the field overall, and were 12-for-22 from the free throw line, but outrebounded UQAM 42-36. The Citadins shot 40% from the field, but hit 22 of their 25 free throw attempts. The Gaiters return home tomorrow night to face the No. 7-ranked Laval Rouge et Or (17-6 overall, 17-5 CIS, 11-2 QUBL) at the Mitchell Gym. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m., and the game will be carried live on SSN.
