HEADLINES Gaiters suffer 73-61 road loss to No. 6 Rouge et Or in women's basketball January 30, 2010 QUEBEC CITY – The Bishop’s Gaiters suffered a 73-61 defeat at the hands of the No. 6-ranked Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec City. Laval (15-5 ,15-4 CIS, 8-1 QUBL) used a balanced attack, with four players scoring in double-digits, as they led for all but 90 seconds of the game. The Gaiters (10-9, 10-9 CIS, 4-6 QUBL) suffered their second straight loss. Laval was led by Marie-Pascale Nadeau’s 15 points and five blocks, with Marie-Michèle Genois adding 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds. The two other Rouge et Or in double digits were Sandrine Ducruc, who came off the bench to score 12 points, while Elyse Jobin scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. The Gaiters were led by Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.), who scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Fourth-year swingman Katy Germain (Val d’Or, Que.) scored 13 points, including three three-pointers, while Gabrielle Côté-Caouette (Quebec City, Que.) scored 11. After the Gaiters took an early 4-2 lead two minutes into the game, Laval responded with an 8-0 run to lead 10-4 with 3:40 gone. Laval led 20-16 after the first quarter. After Laval stretched their lead to 16-6, the Gaiters crawled back with an 8-0 run to cut the margin to two at 16-14. Laval led 20-16 after the first quarter. The second quarter proved to be the Gaiters’ undoing, as they endured two separate four-minute scoring droughts. The Gaiters’ first-half shooting woes (29.7%) allowed Laval to stretch their lead to 15 points at 36-21 with 1:12 to play. A pair of last-minute Gaiter baskets cut the halftime margin to 36-25, the third straight sub-30-point first half for Bishop’s. The Gaiters recovered early in the second half, as a pair of three-pointers by Germain cut Laval’s lead to 40-35, but they could get no closer than five points adrift of the home side, who led 56-51 after three quarters. Chanel le St-Amour’s three-pointer with 7:16 left was the decisive blow, as she put Laval up 63-53 with 7:16 left. The Rouge et Or outrebounded the Gaiters 40-28, while both teams finished with identical 39.7% shooting percentages. The Gaiters were 6-for-21 from three-point territory, while Laval was 3-for-15. The Gaiters are idle next week, and return to action on Friday, February 12, as they visit the UQAM Citadins (10-10, 10-10 CIS, 5-5 QUBL). Tipoff at the UQAM Sports Centre in Montreal is set for 6 p.m. |
