LENNOXVILLE – A double-double by Anneth Him-Lazarenko led the McGill Martlets to a 57-51 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League women’s action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. The second-year forward led all scorers with 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Martlets held off a pair of second-half charges by the Gaiters. The Martlets improve to 4-6 in the QUBL (9-10 overall), putting them in a tie for third in the QUBL with the Gaiters, who fall to 4-5 (10-8 overall).

The Martlets led by as many as 13 in the third quarter, but the Gaiters came all the way back and tied the game at 48-48 with four minutes left. However, the Gaiters could not get over the hump and take the lead, and the visitors held on for the victory.

Katy Germain’s (Val d’Or, Que.) 15 points and three steals led the Gaiters in a losing cause, with Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) scoring eight points and adding four assists.

Besides Him-Lazarenko, McGill had two other players in double figures, with Marie-Eve Martin scoring 12 points, and Nathifa Weekes adding 11.

As they did last week, the Gaiters got off to a slow start, shooting only 24% from the field (6-for-25) in the first half. The Martlets took advantage and led throughout the game, taking a 13-9 lead after the first quarter. McGill stretched their lead to ten on a 6-0 run in the first minute of the second quarter and maintained that edge through the rest of the first half, taking a 29-19 lead into halftime.

The Martlets took their largest lead of the night at 40-27 halfway through the third period. However, the Gaiters responded with an 11-2 run, keyed by six of Lemoine’s eight points, to cut the margin to four at 42-38, and McGill led 44-40 after three quarters.

In the fourth, a three-pointer by Weekes put McGill up 48-40, but the Gaiters went on an 8-0 run to tie the game, with Germain making a steal and driving to the net to tie the game at 48-48 with four minutes left. The teams traded three-pointers to tie the game at 51-51 with 3:27 to play, but the Gaiters missed their last four field goal attempts of the game and were unable to take the lead.

The Gaiters are back in action tomorrow night as they taken on the Laval Rouge et Or (14-5, 14-4 CIS, 8-1 QUBL) at the PEPS in Quebec City. The Martlets will host Concordia (9-10, 9-10 CIS, 3-7 QUBL) tomorrow night. Both games tip off at 6 p.m.
