HEADLINES Women’s Basketball Gaiters come from behind to defeat Stingers 63-52 January 22, 2010 MONTREAL – A pair of big second-half performances by Katy Germain (Val d’Or, Que.) and Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) keyed the Bishop’s Gaiters to a 63-52 come-from-behind victory over the Concordia Stingers in Quebec University Basketball League women’s action tonight in Montreal. Germain finished with 20 points, 15 in the second half, while Ouellet-Godcharles scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half as the Gaiters rebounded from a 28-21 halftime deficit. The Gaiters improved to 10-7 on the year, 4-4 in the QUBL, while Concordia drops to 8-13 overall, 3-5 in league play. The key to the Gaiters’ second half comeback was their three-point shooting. In the first half, the Gaiters missed all eight attempts from beyond the arc. In the second half, the Gaiters went 8-for-14 from downtown, led by three from Germain and four by Ouellet-Godcharles. Germain’s 20 points led all scorers, as she went 8-for-19 from the field and collected a season-high six rebounds. Ouellet-Godcharles was the only other Gaiter in double figures, with her 18 points highlighted by her four three-pointers. Jessy Roy (Val d’Or, Que.) finished with five points, but tied for the team lead with six rebounds and made a team-high three steals. Concordia was led by Kristin Portwine and Nekeita Lee who scored 12 points each. Anne-Marie Prophète and Jill Verhesen grabbed a game-high eight rebounds each. The Gaiters got off to a slow start, going 2-for-18 from the field in the first quarter, and trailed 13-7 after ten minutes. The Stingers led by as many as ten points in the second quarter, and took a 28-21 lead into the interval. The Gaiters’ comeback started with a 13-4 run to open the half. Germain’s second three-pointer of the half tied the game at 32-32, and she put the Gaiters up 34-32 a minute later - the Gaiters’ first lead since a 2-0 edge in the first minute. A three-pointer by Ouellet-Godcharles with 3:42 left in the quarter put the Gaiters up for good at 37-36, sending the Gaiters to a 43-37 lead after three periods. In the fourth quarter, the Stingers pulled to within five points down at 51-46, but Bishop’s put the game away with a 12-2 run, keyed by eight points by rookie forward Bethan Chalke (North Vancouver, B.C.). The Gaiters’ next action is on Friday, January 29, as they take on the McGill Martlets. Tipoff at the Mitchell Gym is set for 6 p.m. |
