HEADLINES Gaiters Women's Basketball drops 61-53 decision to UQAM January 15, 2010 LENNOXVILLE - A double-double by Irline Noël led the UQAM Citadins to a 61-53 decision over the Bishop's Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League women's action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. Noel scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds - both game highs - as the Citadins led from wire-to-wire and held off a late Gaiters charge. Noël was one of four Citadins in double figures, as Karine Boudrias scored 15 points, Jessica Bibeau-Coté scored 11 and Emie Simard added ten. The Gaiters were led by 15 points from Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.), with Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) scoring 12 points. The Gaiters got off to a slow start, allowing UQAM to take 14-8 lead after the first quarter. The Citadins closed the period on a 9-3 run, led by five points from Bibeau-Côté. UQAM led by as many as 11 points in the second before the Gaiters ended the half on a 6-1 run to cut the halftime lead to 31-26. The Citadins scored the first seven points of the second half to pull the lead to 12 points. A pair of layups by Lemoine pulled the Gaiters back to within seven points at 40-33, but four straight points by Noel pushed the lead back out to 11, and the Citadins led 50-39 after three quarters. The Gaiters mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter, as Ouellet-Godcharles' jumper put the Gaiters to within four points at 56-52 with 2:58 left. She made a free throw 30 seconds later to cut the deficit to three, and made a steal that gave the Gaiters a chance to tie. However, Katy Germain's three-point attempt from the corner rimmed out, and Bishop's could pull no closer. Simard scored the game's final five points to seal the victory. UQAM outrebounded Bishop's 38-28, and shot 19-for-48 from the field (39.6%). The Gaiters were 21-for-50 (42.0%) from the field, but struggled from the free-throw line, hitting only six of their 14 attempts. UQAM went to the line 28 times, making 17. The Gaiters (9-7, 9-7 CIS, 3-4 QUBL) return to action on Friday night as they visit the Concordia Stingers (3-4 QUBL) in Montreal. Tipoff at the Concordia Gym is set for 8 p.m. |
