Gaiters Women's Basketball cruises to 62-52 victory over Martlets

January 6, 2010

MONTREAL - A season-high 22 points by Katy Germain (Val d’Or, Que.) led the Bishop’s Gaiters to a 62-52 win over the McGill Marlets in a Quebec University Basketball League women’s game tonight. Germain went 7-for-15 from the field, and made six free throws, as the Gaiters prevailed in a defensive struggle.

Germain was the only Gaiter in double figures, while Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) and Jessy Roy (Val d’Or, Que.) added eight points each and Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) scored seven. Robyn Wilson led all players with 12 rebounds, as the Gaiters outrebounded McGill 45-31.

McGill was led by Anneth Him-Lazarenko, who recorded a double-double (15 points, ten rebounds), while Nathifa Weekes scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds.

The teams were even through the first half, with neither offence finding much success at the basket, as the Gaiters shot 37.5%, while McGill only hit 21.2% of their shots. McGill led 13-12 after the first quarter and by as many as six points in the second quarter, but the Gaiters rebounded to take a 30-26 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Germain took over. She scored three baskets in less than two minutes to stretch the Gaiters’ lead to 41-30, their largest of the night. McGill pulled back to within four points near the end of the third quarter, but they could draw no closer. The Gaiters led 45-39 after three quarters. With 1:23 remaining, a three-pointer by Ouellet-Godcharles three-pointer gave Bishop’s an insurmountable 56-46 lead. McGill was able to pull back to within six points at 58-52 in the last minute, but four free throws by Germain sealed the victory.

The Gaiters shot 34% from the field, but had more success from the free-throw line, where they hit 11 of 12 attempts. McGill shot only 27% from the field, and was 16-for-22 from the line.

The Gaiters (9-6, 9-6 CIS, 3-3 QUBL) are off until Friday, January 15, when they will host the UQAM Citadins. Tipoff at the Mitchell Gym is set for 6 p.m.
