LENNOXVILLE – A career-high 20 points by Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) went for nought as the Bishop’s Gaiters dropped an 87-78 decision to the Brock Badgers on Day 3 of the Classique des Citadins women’s basketball tournament in Montreal. The Badgers broke the game open with a 13-2 run in the third and fourth quarters to put the game away.

The Gaiters got off to a strong start, as Lemoine put the Gaiters up 12-8 with just over three minutes gone. However, the Badgers responded with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 19-12 lead. The Badgers led 30-23 after the first quarter, and stretched their lead to 46-35 by halftime.

Brock took a 14-point lead, their largest of the afternoon, early in the third quarter, but the Gaiters went on a 16-2 run to tie the game at 53-53 with four minutes left in the period. Two minutes later, Katy Germain put the Gaiters ahead 58-57 with three of her 17 points. With the game tied 61-61 late in the third, Badgers’ Lauren Stewart put the game away as she scored eight of her game-high 25 points, leading Brock on a 13-2 run.

A pair of Robyn Wilson (Vancouver, B.C.) free throws pulled to within three points at 81-78 in the last minute, but the Badgers hit four free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.

The Badgers outshot the Gaiters 46% to 45%, and outrebounded Bishop’s 43-34. The Gaiters had more success from the three-point line today, hitting eight of 20 shots, while Brock was good on seven of 21 attempts.

Lemoine’s 20 points led the Gaiters, as she went 8-for-13 from the field. Germain added 17 points in 38 minutes, including five three-pointers, while Wilson scored a career-high 14 points. Jessy Roy (Val d’Or, Que.) returned to play today, finishing with nine points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

In addition to Stewart’s 25 points, the Badgers had two other players in double figures, as Whitney Gorges scored 20 and Emily McKay hit for 16 points. Gorges also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, while McKay picked up seven.

The Gaiters (8-6, 8-6 CIS, 2-4 QUBL) return to QUBL play next Wednesday, January 6, as they visit the McGill Martlets. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Love Competition Hall in Montreal.
