LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop’s Gaiters Women’s Basketball team erased an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 65-58 in the opening game of the Classique des Citadins in Montreal tonight. The Gaiters scored only four points in the first quarter, trailed 28-20 at halftime and by as many as 16 points in the third quarter, but went on a 24-3 run to take the lead with nine minutes to go.

Gabrielle Côté-Caouette (Quebec City, Que.) put the Gaiters ahead at 45-44 with 8:47 left in the game, as she scored two of her game-high 14 points. Her layup capped the decisive 24-3 second-half run that erased a 41-25 Golden Hawks lead. Bishop’s never looked back from that point, and led by as many as ten points in the late stages. Fourth-year guard Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) scored eight of her nine points on the Gaiters’ run, highlighting a strong effort at both ends of the floor.

Laurier had run out to a 12-4 lead after the first quarter and built their 28-20 halftime lead on the strength of a 45.8% first-half shooting percentage. The Golden Hawks started the second half on an 8-0 run to build their lead up to 16 points, their highest of the game. Conversely, the Gaiters started the game slowly, as they shot a dismal 19% from the field in the first half, but bounced back to shoot 44% in the second half.

Overall, the Golden Hawks outshot Bishop’s 42% to 33%, but committed 36 turnovers to the Gaiters’ 27. Laurier held a slight edge in rebounds, 37 to 34.

Côté-Caouette was the only Gaiter in double figures, with her 14 points, while Ouellet-Godcharles and Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) scored nine each. Coté-Caouette and Robyn Wilson (Vancouver, B.C.) led the Gaiters with five rebounds each. Katy Germain (Val d’Or, Que.), the Gaiters’ leading scorer, was held to five points, but was solid defensively with a team-high three steals in 29 minutes.

For Laurier, Renata Adamczyk and Christa Mancino scored 13 points each, with Mallory Kohlmeier adding nine. Adamczyk and Megan Grant each grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

The Gaiters (7-5, 7-5 CIS, 2-3 QUBL) resume play at the Classique des Citadins tomorrow at 2:30 p.m., as they take on the Waterloo Warriors (3-10, 3-9 CIS, 2-6 OUA).
