Wins by Men's Rugby and Basketball highlight busy Gaiters' Friday night

October 30, 2009

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters were in action on four fronts on a busy Friday night in Lennoxville, with Men's Rugby and Men's Basketball picking up home wins, while Men's Lacrosse and Women's Soccer went down to defeat. Men's Rugby advanced to their third straight QURU Championship game with a 15-12 win over the Concordia Stingers at Coulter Field. Meanwhile, inside the Mitchell Gym, Men's Basketball fought off a late comeback attempt to defeat the UPEI Panthers 82-80. Earlier in the evening, Women's Soccer fell 4-1 to McGill in their final home game of the season. The only road action for the Gaiters involved the Lacrosse team, who dropped a 6-5 decision to McGill in their CUFLA Quarter-final game.

MEN'S RUGBY: The Pack attacked for Gaiters Men's Rugby, as the forwards accounted for both Gaiters tries in a 15-12 semifinal win over the Concordia Stingers. The Gaiters led throughout, as Billy Murphy (Richmond, Que.) opened the scoring with a 32-yard penalty goal in the 5th minute. No. 8 Ryan Lethbridge (Ottawa, Ont.) extended the Gaiters' lead to 8-0 with a try on the stroke of halftime. Concordia's Percy Graham ran the ball in from ten yards out in the 57th minute to narrow the margin to 8-5. However, Gaiters' Flanker Mathieu Alexandre (Ste-Catherine-de-Hatley, Que.) clinched the game four minutes later, after the pack had pushed the ball into the end zone. Murphy's conversion pushed the lead out to 15-5. The Stingers pulled pack in the last minute as they were awarded a penalty try, and Xavier Birot's convert put Concordia to within three. It proved to be too little, too late, however, as the Gaiters celebrated their fourth straight win.

The Gaiters will face the McGill Redmen (7-0, 6-0 QURU) on Saturday, November 7, in the Quebec University Rugby Union Championship game. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Percival Molson Stadium.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Rookie guard Onnex Blackwood (Toronto, Ont.) scored 18 points to lead the Gaiters to an 82-80 victory over the UPEI Panthers. A boisterous Halloween-weekend crowd in the Mitchell Gym saw the Gaiters led as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter, but withstood a late charge by the Panthers to hold on to the win.

The first half was evenly matched, with ten lead changes and two ties in the first 20 minutes. The Gaiters trailed 20-16 after the first quarter, but outscored UPEI 32-21 in the second period to take a 48-43 halftime lead. The Gaiters continued to roll in the third quarter, behind seven points from rookie Jamil Abiad (Ottawa, Ont.) and six from Blackwood to take their largest lead of the night at 73-58.

The fourth quarter saw the Panthers start to creep back into the game, and Calvin Leblanc put the Panthers to within two points with less than 30 seconds to go as he scored two of his 11 points. The Panthers had the ball in the Gaiters' frontcourt with 20 seconds left and a chance to tie, but were unable to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.

Five Gaiters finished in double figures, led by Blackwood's 18. Fifth-year forward Hermon Tesfaghebriel recorded his second straight double-double, with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Tim Hunter and Abiad each finished with 13 points, while Tim McAleenan scored ten. UPEI's Manock Lual led all scorers with 22 points to go with his game-high 11 rebounds, while Terrence Brown added 18 points, with Matt Fennell scoring 14, Nick Toews 12 and Calvin LeBlanc 11.

The Gaiters shot 50.8% from the field, while holding UPEI to 44.4%. Both teams went 8-for-17 from three-point territory. The teams combined for 44 fouls, and 57 free throws, as UPEI went 24-for-33 from the line.

The Gaiters' alumni weekend continues on Sunday afternoon, as they face the Cape Breton Capers at the Mitchell Gym. Tipoff is set for noon.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: At Coulter Field, the Gaiters dropped their final home game of the 2009 season, a 4-1 loss at the hands of the McGill Martlets. Anna Smith led the Martlets with a goal and two assists, while Elizabeth Williams, Alexandra Morin-Boucher and Christina DiCaprio each netted a goal. Becky Yates, playing in midfield for the first time in several weeks, scored the Gaiters' only goal in the 72nd minute. Katie Wallace picked up her third straight team MVP honour, while Hannah Simmmons won similar honours for the Gaiters. McGill outshot Bishop's 20-5, with the Gaiters' Koula Trichas making eight saves in a losing cause.

The Gaiters close out the 2009 season on Sunday afternoon at CEPSUM as they face the Montreal Carabins. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

LACROSSE: The Gaiters' lacrosse season came to a premature end tonight in Montreal, as third-seeded Bishop's suffered a heartbreaking 6-5 loss to the No. 2-seed McGill Redmen. The teams were tied with two goals apiece after the first quarter, but McGill took a 4-2 lead into halftime. The third quarter proved to be decisive, as McGill outscored Bishop's 3-1, including the eventual game-winner by Nick Moreau with 1:49 left in the period.

In the fourth quarter, the Gaiters pulled back to within one, and attackman Mike Dubé (Brockville, Ont.) looked to be open in the dying seconds with the potential game-tying goal. However, it was not to be, as he was robbed by McGill's Guy Fox, sending Bishop's out in the quarter-final round for the second straight year.

Dubé finished the night with two goals, as did Jesse Gattelllaro, with a Joe LaLeune single rounding out the scoring. Greg Henry led McGill with three goals.
