October 24, 2009

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters were in action on three fronts on Saturday night, with both basketball teams in tournament action against the Cape Breton Capers, while Men's Lacrosse hosted Queen's. Women's Basketball came away with a 70-55 win over the Capers at the Don Grant Invitational in Moncton, while Men's Basketball fell 97-55 to the Capers at the Jack Donohue tournament in Ottawa. On the Lacrosse field, the Gaiters suffered their second straight loss with a 9-8 defeat to Queen's.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: The Gaiters fell 97-55 to the Cape Breton Capers on Day 2 of the Jack Donohue Tournament in Ottawa. The Capers led 36-24 at halftime, before pulling away in the late stages. A pair of rookies led the Gaiters, as Onnex Blackwood (Toronto, Ont.) led the Gaiters with 15 points, while Oraine Greene (Toronto, Ont.) had 11. The Gaiters close out the tournament tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m., as they face the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: In Moncton, the Gaiters picked up their second straight win, a 70-55 victory over the Cape Breton Capers. The Capers, who finished last season ranked No. 6 in the country, trailed 42-27 at halftime, as the Gaiters led throughout the game. The Gaiters' uptempo attack was again on display, as four players hit double figures, led by Katy Germain' 14 points (Val d'Or, Que.). Gabrielle Côté-Caouette (Quebec City, Que.) scored 12 points, while Jessy Roy (Val d'Or, Que.)scored 11 and Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) added ten. Roy was named the Gaiters' player of the game, as she recorded a team-high four assists.

The Gaiters close out the tournament tomorrow at 11 a.m. Eastern (12 noon local) against the Dalhousie Tigers.

LACROSSE: At Coulter Field, the Gaiters were upset 9-8 by the Queen's Golden Gaels. The loss, their second in three days, drops the Gaiters to 6-3 on the season, and will need a win over Trent (6-2) tomorrow to force a three-way tie for first place in the CUFLA East Division with McGill (7-3). A Gaiters loss would leave them tied for third with Carleton (6-4). The Gaiters face the Trent Excalibur tomorrow at Coulter Field. Faceoff is set for noon.
