Men's Rugby shutout highlights Gaiters' Homecoming Friday action

October 2, 2009

LENNOXVILLE - Soccer and rugby took centre stage tonight as Coulter Field hosted a trifecta of games as part of Bishop's annual Homecoming celebration. Women's Soccer dropped the opening game 1-0 to the Sherbrooke Vert & Or. Men's Rugby had better luck against Sherbrooke, notching a 32-0 win over the Vert & Or. In the nightcap, Women's Rugby fell 50-3 to the No. 4-ranked Laval Rouge et Or.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: The Gaiters fell 1-0 to the Sherbrooke Vert & Or in the evening's first contest. Sherbrooke held the early edge in play, and Chloé Belhumeur-Limoges broke through and deked around the Gaiters' Becky Yates to net her sixth goal of the season. Her goal in the 16th minute held up as the winner, as the defences took hold from that point. Yates, making her second straight start in goal for the Gaiters, made six saves and was named the Player of the Game. Belhumeur-Limoges took the honours for Sherbrooke.

The Gaiters (1-5-1) are next in action on Wednesday, Oct. 7, when they will visit the Vert et Or (5-1-0).

MEN'S RUGBY: Men's Rugby picked up their first win of the season in emphatic fashion with a 32-0 shutout of the Sherbrooke Vert et Or. The Gaiters dominated from the opening kickoff, as the pack moved the ball downfield quickly, and Matt Pereira put the ball down in the third minute to open the scoring. Billy Murphy's conversion, the first of his three, put Bishop's up 7-0 with only four minutes gone. Ryan Lethbridge scored the only other try in the first half, while a 38-yard penalty goal by Murphy on the stroke of halftime gave Bishop's a 17-0 lead. Jamie Le Huquet and Lethbridge scored second-half tries for the Gaiters, while a second Murphy penalty goal rounded out the scoring.

The Gaiters (1-3) have a bye next week, and will return to action on Oct. 18th, with a visit to Sherbrooke (0-4). Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.

WOMEN’S RUGBY: In the nightcap, the Gaiters fell 50-3 to the No. 4-ranked Laval Rouge et Or. Laval held the advantage early, as they scored seven first-half tries en route to a 40-0 halftime lead. Élie Papineau and Karen Paquin each scored two tries for Laval, while Frédérique Saucier, Catherine Carrier, Onienté K.Laflamme and Claudiane Renaud each scored one. Renaud was good on five of eight conversions. The Gaiters broke the shutout in the 73rd minute when Sue Magwood connected on a penalty goal - marking the first points scored by Bishop's against Laval since 2006.

The Gaiters (0-4) are in action on Thursday night, Oct. 8, as they host the Sherbrooke Vert & Or (0-3)

Homecoming activities continue tomorrow with the Gaiter Walk for ALS at 10 a.m. in the Quad. At 1 p.m. the Gaiters football team (1-3) will host McGill (2-2) at Coulter Field.
