Provincial champion commits to Gaiters' Men's Basketball

March 11, 2010

LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop's University men’s basketball team announced today that Matt McLean of Ashbury College in Ottawa has committed to the Gaiters, and will be joining the team for the 2010-11 season.

“We are pleased to welcome Matt to the Gaiter family. He is a very skilled big man, an excellent passer and he makes the players around him better,” said Rod Gilpin, the Gaiters’ Head Coach. “We expect Matt to have an immediate impact on our program, and we think that he has a lot of potential.

McLean, a 6' 8", 200 lb. forward, has played for three years with the Ashbury Colts, where he has won two provincial championship medals. This year, he captained the Colts to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) Class "A" championship, scoring nine points in yesterday’s final game. Earlier in the day, he made a key late dunk, as well as a free throw with no time left, to send the Colts to the provincial championship game. Last season, McLean led the Colts to a bronze medal at the provincial championship. He is a two-time team MVP, and averages 14 points and 12 rebounds per game.

McLean has also spent the past three seasons with the Ottawa Guardsmen club team, most recently on their Under-18 and Under-19 teams, winning a gold medal at last year's AAU tournament in Boston. He also participated in the Ontario Provincial Development Program in 2009.

McLean will become the fifth member of his family to attend Bishop's, following both his parents (Bryan McLean '81 and Cathy (McRae) McLean '82), along with his cousin (Tim Dooley '83) and uncle (Bruce McRae '83). McLean's father, Bryan, played with the Gaiters from 1978-81, while Dooley was a member of the 1982-83 team.

The Gaiters concluded their 2009-10 season last Friday night, and finished with a 12-17 record (7-9 QUBL) - their highest win total in the past five years.
