March 5, 2010

Box Score

MONTREAL – Adil El Makssoud’s 34 points led the UQAM Citadins to an 98-70 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters in a Quebec University Basketball League semifinal tonight in Montreal. The raucous crowd of 527 saw the second-year guard go 13-for-24 from the field, as the Citadins (17-14, 12-10 CIS, 11-5 QUBL) forced 29 Gaiters turnovers to pick up the win.

Makssoud led all scorers, while Kevin Bitondo, who started in place of the injured Gregory Saint-Amand, recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Jules Diagne scored 14 points.

For Bishop’s (12-17, 10-17 CIS, 7-9 QUBL), Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.) led with 19 points, while Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) closed out his university career with 15 points. Damon Thomas-Anderson (Verdun, Que.) scored 11 points in what was also his final university game. Tesfaghebriel and Tim Hunter (Baie d’Urfé, Que.) led the Gaiters with seven rebounds each. The Gaiters' other graduating senior, Tim McAleenan (Sussex, N.B.) finished with five points and five rebounds.

The Gaiters led through most of the first quarter, but surrendered the lead at 1:24 when Kevin Levy hit a three-pointer to give UQAM a 19-18 lead. UQAM led 23-19 after the first quarter, thanks to a 7-2 run to end the period.

The Citadins started to pull away in the second quarter, as the Gaiters went over four minutes midway through the quarter without scoring a field goal. UQAM took advantage, scoring 11 straight points to run out to a 40-25 lead with three minutes left. They maintained the 15-point edge at halftime, leading 46-31.

UQAM pulled out to a 23-point lead at 3:57 of the third, after El Makssoud made the score 58-35.Bishop’s responded with an 18-0 run over the next 2:28 to pull to within five points at 58-53 with 1:29 left in the quarter that sent the large travelling contingent into hysterics. However, that was as close as the Gaiters got, as UQAM ended the quarter on a 7-0 run, and had stretched the lead out to 19 points less than two minutes into the fourth.

The loss puts an end to the Gaiters’ 2009-10 season, as they finish with a 12-17 overall record, their winningest season in the past five years. UQAM will host the QUBL Championship game, next Saturday (March 12) against the winner of tomorrow’s Laval-McGill semifinal.
