Blackwood named QUBL First Team All-Star
March 4, 2010
LENNOXVILLE – Rookie guard Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.) of the
Bishop's Gaiters has been named a Quebec University Basketball League
First Team All-Star, as well as a member of the league's All-Rookie
Team. The league office in Montreal made the announcement today.
Blackwood becomes the
first rookie to be named a QUBL First Team All-Star since Laval's
Jean-François Beaulieu Maheux was named a First Team All-Star and Rookie
of the Year in 2007.
Blackwood, 18,
quickly established himself as one of the elite players in the Quebec
University Basketball League, leading the Gaiters to their first playoff
berth in four years. He made an immediate impact on the Gaiters' lineup,
scoring a team-high 14 points in his first-ever university game: October
16 at Carleton - then ranked No. 1, and the the defending national
champions.
"You
don't expect a true freshman to come in and lead your team in scoring
and rebounding," said Gaiters' Head Coach Rod Gilpin. "“He plays with
energy and competes in every game. He took advantage of the opportunity
he was given, and we are thrilled with his development this year. He is
very deserving of this honour, and more."
The graduate of
Toronto's Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School finished third overall
in the QUBL with 15.7 points per game, and seventh in the loop with 5.8
rebounds per game. His 0.490 field goal percentage is sixth in the
league, and he is eighth with 1.4 steals per game, and ninth with 29.3
minutes played per game. He was the leading rookie in all of those
categories.
Blackwood is only the
second QUBL rookie since 2002-03 (the earliest stats that are available)
to average at least 15 points and five rebounds per game, and only the
third rookie in that span to finish in the top three in the league
scoring list.
Overall, Blackwood
started in 25 games this year, and scored in double digits 20 times,
including a career-high 29 points last Saturday night at Laval. He had
eight 20-point games, and he leads the Gaiters with three double-doubles
this season, highlighted by a 24-point 11-rebound performance at
Concordia on January 22, 2010.
The Gaiters will play
the UQAM Citadins tomorrow night in a QUBL semifinal. Tipoff at the UQAM
Sports Centre is set for 7 p.m.
