Career-high by Blackwood goes for naught in Gaiters' 90-83 loss at Laval

February 27, 2010

Box Score

QUEBEC CITY – A career high 29 points by rookie sensation Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.) went for naught as the Gaiters suffered a 90-83 loss to the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec University Basketball League action tonight in Quebec City. Blackwood continued his quest for the league’s Rookie of the Year title as he went 11-for-18 from the field and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

With the loss, Bishop’s (12-16, 10-16 CIS, 7-9 QUBL) finishes in fourth place in the QUBL, while Laval (16-17, 14-14 CIS, 10-6 QUBL) clinched second place with the win. The Gaiters will visit the UQAM Citadins in one QUBL semifinal, while the Rouge et Or will host McGill in the other.

Blackwood’s 29 points led all scorers, and is the highest total by a Gaiter since Junior Nicolas scored 36 against Acadia on January 3, 2009. The true freshman went 7-for-11 from the free-throw line and tied for the team lead with four assists and two steals. Fellow newcomer Oraine Green (Toronto, Ont.) added 25 points, also a career high, and grabbed six rebounds and made four assists. Senior forward Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) was held to six points but had seven rebounds.

Laval was led by Jean-François Beaulieu-Maheux, who scored 23 points on 9-for-15 shooting, and Etienne Labrecque, who had a double-double with 21 points and ten rebounds. Xavier Baribeau’s 13 points and Kevin Crevant’s ten rounded out the Rouge et Or’s leading scorers.

The Gaiters got off to a rocky start, surrendering a pair of early three-pointers as Laval took an 8-2 lead. However, Bishop’s responded with an 8-3 run to pull to within 11-10 and they took a 21-20 lead on a Green three-pointer at the end of the first quarter.

That, however, proved to be the Gaiters’ only lead, as a pair of free throws by Crevant early in the second quarter put Laval back up 22-21. Laval led by as many as nine points in the second quarter, and 44-38 at halftime.

Blackwood cut the gap to four at 8:50 of the third quarter, but Laval used a 7-0 run in the next minute to stretch their lead back out to 51-40. Bishop’s chipped away at the lead, and cut it 64-59 by the end of the period.

The Gaiters nearly completed the comeback in the fourth quarter, as a three-pointer by Green cut the lead to two points at 66-64. But Laval put the game away with a 12-3 run over four minutes, giving them an 80-69 lead with 4:08 to go.

The Gaiters’ next action will be on Friday night, as they visit the top-seeded UQAM Citadins in the QUBL semifinal, the Gaiters’ first playoff game since 2006. Tipoff at the UQAM Sports Centre is set for 7 p.m.
