February 26, 2010

Box Score

LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop's Gaiters used a balanced attack to score a come-from-behind 75-65 win over the UQAM Citadins in Quebec University Basketball League action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. The Gaiters trailed by as many as 19 points in the third quarter, but used a stifling defence to chip away at the lead, before finally taking the lead early in the fourth quarter. Bishop's improves to 12-15 on the year (10-15 CIS, 7-8 QUBL), while UQAM, the league pennant winners, fall to 15-14 overall (14-10 CIS, 10-5 QUBL).

In total, five players scored in double figures for the Gaiters, led by 20 points from Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.). The rookie-of-the-year candidate went 6-for-11 from the field and 7-for-8 from the free throw line, and picked up three rebounds. Fellow newcomer Oraine Green (Toronto, Ont.) scored 11 points on 3-for-7 shooting.

The Gaiters' three graduating seniors: Tim McAleenan (Sussex, N.B.), Damon Thomas-Anderson (Verdun, Que.) and Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) all took advantage of their last home game to score over double figures. Thomas-Anderson netted 13 points, while Tesfaghebriel and McAleenan added 11 each.

UQAM was led by Adil El Makssoud's 19 points and eight rebounds, with Gregory Saint-Amand added 15 and Jules Diagne scoring 14 points.

UQAM got off to a strong start, racing out to an early 12-2 lead. However, the Gaiters chipped away at the lead, and pulled back to within one at 17-16, thanks to a Jeremy Leonard-Smith layup.

The Citadins pulled their lead back out to 21-16 after the first quarter, part of a 10-0 run over 2:23 that allowed UQAM to eventually lead by as many as 11 points.

UQAM led 47-33 at 8:00 when the game threatened to get out of hand. After Tim Hunter (Baie d'Urfé, Que.) was called for a foul in the backcourt, Rod Gilpin, the Gaiters' Head Coach, drew two technical fouls and earned his first career ejection. El Makssoud made two of the ensuing four free throws to put the Citadins up by 15. Just over a minute later, UQAM took their largest lead of the night at 52-33 with 6:49 left.

The Gaiters started to chip away at the lead, as they held UQAM without a field goal for 5:22 late in the third quarter. During that time, Bishop's went on a 11-2 run, keyed by seven points by Thomas-Anderson, to cut the margin to eight points at 55-47. A McAleenan layup with 19 seconds left in the third pulled Bishop's to within two possessions at 59-53.

In the fourth quarter, it was clear the momentum had swung towards the home side. A pair of Green three-pointers gave the Gaiters their first lead of the night at 61-59, culminating a 12-0 Bishop's run. The Gaiters held UQAM to only six points in the fourth quarter, as they only made two field goals. Tesfaghebriel put the Gaiters up for good as his three-point play at 2:20 put Bishop's up 68-65. Bishop's went 5-for-6 from the line down the stretch to ice the victory.

The Gaiters close out the regular season tomorrow night in Quebec City, as they face the Laval Rouge et Or. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m, and the game will be webcast on http://www.rougeetor.tv.
