............... HEADLINES Tesfaghebriel leads Gaiters into men’s basketball playoffs with win over Concordia February 20, 2010 LENNOXVILLE – Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) scored 23 points to lead the Bishop’s Gaiters to a 73-67 Quebec University Basketball League win over the Concordia Stingers tonight. The raucous Winter Homecoming crowd of 1,115 saw the Gaiters clinch their first trip to the postseason since 2005-06. The win improves the Gaiters’ regular season record to 6-8 (11-15 overall, 9-15 CIS), while Concordia falls to 4-11 in the league (10-19 overall, 10-15 CIS) and is eliminated from the playoffs. Tesfaghebriel’s 23 points, a season high, led all scorers, and his nine rebounds made him just short of a double-double. The fifth-year centre went 7-for-14 from the field and 9-for-10 from the free throw line, as well as making a game-high three steals and a pair of blocks. The only other Gaiter in double figures was Oraine Green (Toronto, Ont.), who scored 13 points including three three-pointers. Rookie guard Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.) scored eight points and grabbed a game-high ten rebounds. For Concordia, Decee Krah led with 18 points, while Jean-Andre Moussignac and Evens Laroche scored 11 points. Laroche also led the Stinger with seven rebounds. The Stingers used a 10-0 run over 1:55 late in the first quarter to take an early 18-11 lead, but the Gaiters chipped away as Jeremy Leonard-Smith was responsible for all the scoring on a 6-2 Bishop’s run at the end of the quarter to cut the Concordia lead to 22-18. Pierre Thompson put Concordia up by nine, their largest lead of the night, at 9:03 of the second, but the Gaiters responded with an 11-3 run, punctuated by a Ryan Steele (Toronto, Ont.) dunk, to cut the gap to one point. Tesfaghebriel put the Gaiters on top for good at 33-32 with 3:05 left in the half. The Gaiters ended the half on a 13-2 run, as they took a 42-34 halftime lead. The Gaiters took their largest lead of the night at 49-36 at 6:41 of the third quarter, but Concordia started to chip away at the lead. A fast-break layup by Morgan Tajfel put the Stingers to within one point at 51-50, but a key bucket by Leonard-Smith restored the three-point lead, and a three-pointer by Green late in the quarter gave Bishop’s a 56-51 lead. The Stingers again got to within one point at 60-59, but the Gaiters again fended off the comeback attempt, this time with a pair of Tesfaghebriel free throws. Free-throw shooting clinched the game for the Gaiters, as they made 13 of 14 free throw attempts in the last 3:21. The Gaiters are back in action on Friday, as they host the UQAM Citadins (15-13, 14-9 CIS, 10-4 QUBL) in what is almost certain to be a playoff preview. Tipoff for the Seniors’ Night game is set for 8 p.m., and the game will be webcast on SSN Canada at http://www.ssncanada.ca BISHOP'S 73, CONCORDIA 67 CONCORDIA (10-19, 4-11 QUBL) – Krah 7-17 2-2 18; Laroche 2-8 6-6 11; Moussignac 4-7 2-2 11; Tajfel 4-5 1-2 9; Garner 3-6 0-0 6; Thompson 2-5 2-2 6; Eyitayo 2-2 0-0 4; Martin 1-2 0-0 2; Clark 0-5 0-2 0.
