February 19, 2010

Box Score

LENNOXVILLE – Onnex Blackwood’s (Scarborough, Ont.) 21 point, seven rebound performance led the Bishop’s Gaiters as they downed the McGill Redmen, 86-74, in Quebec University Basketball League men’s action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. He scored eight third-quarter points as the Gaiters pulled away from the Redmen, converting a 34-30 halftime lead into a 61-49 edge after three quarters.

The Gaiters’ point total is the second-highest of the season, and their 53.6% shooting percentage was their best total of the year. The Gaiters shot a blistering 60.7% in the second half, while limiting McGill to 45.2% in the half, and 42.1% overall.

The win snaps the Gaiters’ four-game losing streak, and puts them alone in fourth place in the QUBL with a 5-8 record (10-15 overall, 8-15 CIS). The win gives the Gaiters their first 10-win season since 2005-06, when they finished 12-15 overall (9-7 QUBL). Bishop’s is now two points ahead of Concordia (4-10). McGill drops to 8-7 in league play (12-16 overall), tied with idle Laval for second place.

Blackwood’s 21 points and seven rebounds were both game highs, while three other Gaiters hit double figures. Damon Thomas-Anderson (Montreal, Que.) scored a season-high 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while Ryan Steele (Toronto, Ont.) and Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) each scored 12. Tesfaghebriel also led the Gaiters with six assists, a career-high. Tim Hunter (Baie d’Urfé, Que.) made two blocks, to bring his league-leading total up to 13 on the season.

McGill had five players in double figures, led by Michael White’s 20 points, with Nicolas Langley scoring 15, Matthew Thornhill and Pawel Herra netting 13 each and Sebastian Gatti adding ten. Langley led the Redmen with six rebounds.

The Redmen led throughout the first quarter, and took an eight-point lead at 21-13 as Herra sank three straight free throws. A late layup by Blackwood cut the first-quarter lead to 21-15 for McGill.

The Gaiters came back in the second, and Steele found Tim McAleenan (Sussex, N.B.) open down low to with 4:52 left to give Bishop’s their first lead at 25-24. The lead changed hands four more times in the period before the Gaiters ended the half on a 6-2 run to take a 34-30 halftime lead.

The third quarter proved to be the difference, as the Gaiters outscored McGill 27-19. After Thornhill cut the lead to two with an early layup, the Gaiters responded with an 8-0 run, capped by a Hunter three-pointer, to take a 42-32 lead. Bishop’s led by as many as 14 points in the quarter and led 61-49 after three quarters.

The Gaiters took their largest lead of the night at 4:47 of the fourth as Oraine Green (Toronto, Ont.) put Bishop’s up 73-58. However, the Redmen responded with a 10-0 run over the 1:40 to cut the gap to five points. McAleenan’s three-pointer with 2:36 left, along with four late free throws by Tesfaghebriel, put the game out of reach, and Blackwood’s late dunk sent the raucous Mitchell Gym crowd into hysterics.

The Redmen are idle until Saturday, February 27, the last day of the regular season, when they will visit UQAM. The Gaiters’ homestand continues tomorrow night as they face Concordia. With a win, the Gaiters would clinch a playoff berth and eliminate the Stingers. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m., and the game will be webcast live on SSN Canada at http://www.ssncanada.ca.
